Thunder 14U trounces Casper at Summer Slam

SCOTTSBLUFF – The Torrington Thunder 14U girls’ softball team opened the Summer Slam hosted by the Scottsbluff 308 United team on June 28-29 with a bang, cruising past the Casper Rebels by a huge 22-3 margin on Friday.

The second game pitted Torrington against the Cheyenne Extreme, with Cheyenne winning, 24-2. The Thunder dropped a close game to the CNSA Rogers-Pack team from Kearney, Nebraska, by 8-5 on Saturday.

In the final game, Torrington came up short against the Gillette Blue Jays, 10-5.

Casper

The Thunder hit the ground running in the opening inning, posting 14 runs in the top of the first. Cecilia Tapia doubled for one run and went on to ground out for two RBI.

Kadence Schamel singled for two RBI while Jennica Steely and Kinley Fisher both singled for one run each. Olivia Meyer drew a walk and was struck by a pitch. Karis Walker and Jadyn Chilson also drew a walk for one run apiece.

Torrington widened its lead with eight runs in the top of the third inning. Kadence Schamel set the pace for the Thunder offense when she tripled for two runs. Jadah Jacobson doubled for one run while Tapia and Chilson both singled for one run each.

Torrington’s fielders held Casper to a single run in the bottom of the first inning and shut out the Rebels in the second inning. Casper only managed to get two runs in the third inning.

Overall, Torrington tallied 12 hits against the Rebels. Kadence Schamel led the Thunder with three hits for three RBI. Kinley Fisher posted three hits for two RBI. Tapia and Steely both contributed two hits while Jacobson, Chilson and Esperanza Chavez each added one hit to the total.

On the mound, Jacobson started as pitcher, striking out four. Steely stepped in as relief.
