Goshen County snags sixth at state trap shoot

TORRINGTON – Local youth represented Goshen County at the Wyoming Trap Shooting State Tournament with flying colors, placing sixth out of 15 schools in the competition on Saturday, June 29.

The County 7 Clay Busters hosted the annual event at the Goshen County Sportsman’s Club near Torrington and will continue to host the event for at least three more years.

The tournament consisted of a morning and an afternoon session with each session including two rounds of shooting. Each contestant took aim at 25 clay pigeons per round for a total of 100 shots.

The event is one of the largest youth shooting competitions in the state with competitors going through approximately 20,000 shells by the end of the day, said coach Abe Correa.

Shooting sports are among the "fastest growing" high school activities, Correa added.

"We hope to continue to grow (shooting sports) here locally and continue to provide shooting opportunities for the youth of Goshen County," Correa said. "We would like to thank the Goshen County Sportsman's Complex and their members who make it possible for us to provide this opportunity to our high school shooting team."

The County 7 Clay Busters posted an overall score of 442 to snag sixth place on the leaderboard. Cheyenne East took the top spot with a cumulative score of 476. Goshen County beat Lyman, Wright, Pine Bluffs, Upton, Riverside, Burns, Sundance and Hulett.

Goshen County’s Remington Mathson tied for third place in the varsity male division with a combined score of 96 out of 100. Mathson opened the tournament with a perfect score of 50 in the morning session (25 out of 25 in each round) to join both the 50- and 25-Straight Club for hitting 50 clay pigeons in a row.

Timberlee Easton made the podium in the novice female category, placing third with a total score of 58.
