Tigers ‘A’ trounce Lobos, defeat Riverton ‘B’ squad

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Tigers ‘A’ squad successfully defended the home field in the final home double-header of the 2024 season with a pair of victories against the Wheatland Lobos on Wednesday, July 10.

The scoreboard tipped heavily in Torrington’s favor, 15-4, after the dust cleared in the first game against the Lobos. Sustaining its momentum into the second game, the Tigers soundly defeated Wheatland, 16-6.

Torrington’s conference wins against Wheatland propelled the Tigers to the No. 2 spot in the ‘A’ East division in team standings on the morning of July 15.

The Tigers also celebrated senior recognition night on July 10, honoring the contributions of its lone senior, Bryce Hager.

On Saturday, the Tigers traveled to play the Riverton ‘B’ team in a doubleheader. A 16-run fourth inning by the Tigers resulted in a resounding 20-13 victory against Riverton in the first game. The Tigers cruised past Riverton, 13-3, in the second game.

Torrington played a make-up conference game against the Cheyenne Eagles on the evening of July 15 that could affect final standings in the ‘A’ division. Final results were pending at press time.

Wheatland

Wheatland jumped out early with two runs in the top of the first inning. The Tigers responded with six runs in the bottom of the first.

Ryan Moorehouse and Grady Shields both singled for two RBI apiece in the first inning. Drew Kramer reached first base on a single before stealing second and third bases and advancing to home plate on a passed ball. Rhett Clarke sacrificed a grounder for the sixth run.

Torrington widened its advantage, 9-2, with three runs in the bottom of the second. Moorehouse doubled for two RBI and Mac Hibben contributed a double for one run.

Four more runs by the Tigers in the bottom of the third inning advanced Torrington to a double-digit lead, 13-2. Kramer and Shields each singled for one RBI apiece. An error drove in one run while Landre Greiman scored a run after tagging up.

Torrington tallied nine hits in the first game, led by Kramer, Shields and Moorehouse with two apiece. Ayden Desmond, Hibben and Garrett Hager each posted one hit. Moorehouse collected four RBI while Shields drove in three runs.

Clarke pitched all five innings in the first game, striking out two.

In the second game, the Tigers found themselves up, 6-2, following six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Desmond doubled for two RBI. Bryce Hager slammed a triple deep into the field for one run. Caleb Kelly singled for two RBI and Hibben drove in one run on a single.

Torrington built upon its lead with one run in the bottom of the second inning and three in the third while the Tigers’ fielders shut out Wheatland in both the second and third innings.

Wheatland outscored Torrington, 4-3, in the fourth inning, but its effort fell short in closing the deficit.

Overall, Torrington collected 14 hits against Wheatland in the second game. Bryce Hager set the momentum for the Tigers with three hits for four RBI. Desmond posted two hits for four RBI while Hibben contributed two hits for three RBI. Greiman and Moorehouse added two hits each to the tally with one apiece by Kramer, Kelly and Clarke.

Shields opened as pitcher for Torrington in the second game, striking out four. Colby Sandusky played relief, striking out four.

Riverton

The first game between Riverton and Torrington found Riverton up, 6-0, at the close of the second inning.

The Tigers collected four runs in the top of the third, but Riverton remained ahead, 13-4, following seven runs by the Raiders in the bottom of the third.

Rallying, Torrington turned the tables on Riverton with an epic 16-run streak in the top of the fourth inning.

The Tigers totaled 11 hits against Riverton in the first game. Moorehouse tallied two hits for three RBI. Kelly had two hits and two RBI while Kramer singled for three RBI. 

Clarke contributed two hits for one RBI while Garrett Hager and Xavier Sanchez both singled for two RBI each. Sandusky and Mateo Correa each added one hit to the tally.

Garrett Hager opened as pitcher, striking out one. Kramer stepped in as relief, striking out two.

Torrington established an early 4-1 lead in the second game following a four-run first inning. The Tigers sealed the win with five runs in the top of the third inning and three in the fourth.

Overall, Torrington collected 10 hits in the second game against the Raiders. Kelly led the effort with three hits for three RBI. Kramer tallied two hits for two RBI. Hibben also contributed two hits with one apiece by Clarke, Moorehouse and Correa.

On the mound, Sandusky started as pitcher, striking out five. Correa played relief, striking out three.
