DOUGLAS – The Southeast High School Lady Cyclones volleyball team battled with grit against significantly larger 2A and 3A programs at the Bearcat Invitational hosted by Douglas from August 30-31.

The event opened with three games of pool play on Friday. Southeast soundly defeated Buffalo in the first match, 2-0.

Squaring off against Torrington in the second match, the Lady Cyclones fought the Lady Blazers through three close matches with Southeast ultimately falling, 2-1.

Rallying in the third match, the Lady Cyclones defeated Glenrock, 2-0.

Southeast’s 2-1 record from pool play advanced the Lady Cyclones to the gold bracket on Friday.

Southeast once again found itself facing Torrington in a close, three-set contest won by the Lady Blazers, 2-1.

The Lady Cyclones recovered in the consolation match against Buffalo to score a 2-0 victory against the Lady Bison.

Progressing to the fifth-place match, Southeast fell to Big Horn, 2-0, and the Lady Cyclones placed sixth overall as a team.

“We competed with every team that we played,” coach Monica Anderson said. “We were the only 1A team at the Douglas Invitational Tournament. Playing in the consolation championship speaks highly of the way this group of girls compete. Tournaments are a great way to see where you’re at, discover what’s working and what needs more practice. We communicated well and celebrated every contribution from every girl on the team. We have a few things to polish up, but we kicked the season off with a successful weekend.”
