CHEYENNE – The Torrington High School cross-country team ran with the big dogs at the season-opener hosted by Cheyenne South at the Little America Golf Course on August 30.

Twenty-three teams of all sizes from across Wyoming gathered for the meet, along with 11 programs from Colorado, including squads from the Denver metro area.

The course at Little America is the same used for the state championships in October, giving competitors a taste of what to expect at the season-culminating event.

Torrington fielded a total of four runners in varsity and three junior varsity contestants. The girls’ varsity race consisted of 172 participants who crossed the finish line on the 5-kilometer course, while 217 harriers completed the boys’ varsity race.

Junior Kaycee Kosmicki led the Goshen County pack in the girls’ varsity race, finishing in 39th place with a time of 21 minutes, 36.30 seconds. Senior Callie Taylor placed 89th, clocking in at 23:16.60.

In boys’ varsity, junior Sullivan Wilson took 44th place, crossing the finish line in 17:57.00. Freshman Cole Tregemba came in 121st at 19:53.50.

Three local athletes competed in the boys’ junior varsity race. Senior Barrett Eichenberger placed 52nd with a time of 21:34.30. Fellow senior Ty Haeffelin placed 146th at 25:16.10 and junior Brody Harrison finished 181st at 29:13.30.
