GILLETTE – The Torrington High School golf team hit the greens at the Bell Knob Golf Course in Gillette for the annual Thunder Basin Invite from August 29-30.

The Lady Blazers placed sixth overall, tallying 593 strokes over the course of two days and beating Thunder Basin High School.

Posting a cumulative score of 731, the Blazer boys came in eighth place as a team, advancing past Douglas and Cheyenne South on the leaderboard.

“We had a good weekend against a loaded 4A field,” coach Jeff Halley said. “Friday has some tough windy conditions, but I though all of kids really competed well. Our girls really had a good weekend as nearly all five of them put at least one round with a career best. As a team, this is the first time that our team has broken 600 over two days in many years.”

Two Lady Blazers broke into the top 20 in Gillette. Senior Kaleigh Waymire led the Torrington pack with an 11th-place finish at 189 strokes. Waymire shot consistently on both days, collecting 94 strokes on Thursday and 95 on Friday.

Fellow senior Madyson Banister finished 17th with 198 strokes. Banister tallied 97 strokes in the first round and 101 in the second.

In varsity boys, junior Caleb Kelly tied for 24th place with a two-day score of 166. Kelly shot 80 in the first round and 86 in the second.

Fellow junior Conner Correll came in 45th place, tallying 184 over the course of two days. Covell advanced from 95 strokes on Thursday to 89 on Friday.
