Tigers ‘A’ defeats Loveland at Border War

CHEYENNE – A tough weekend for the Torrington Tigers ‘A’ Legion team against challenging Colorado opponents at the WYCO Border War in Cheyenne culminated in the Tigers defeating Loveland, 12-9, on June 21.

In the opening game on Friday morning, Torrington came up short by a single run, 3-2, in a neck-and-neck battle against the Greeley Grays.

On Saturday, the Tigers squared off against USA Prime from Johnstown, Colorado, with the Prime taking the win, 17-5.

The tournament ended with Torrington falling to Fort Collins, 13-4, on Sunday.

Greeley

Following a 0-0 deadlock in the first inning, Greeley scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead, 2-0.

Both teams scored one run in the third inning, although Greeley remained ahead, 3-1. The Tigers came close to bridging the deficit with one run in the top of the fifth inning.

Overall, Torrington tallied five hits against Greeley. Ayden Desmond led the Tiger offense with two hits for two RBI. Drew Kramer, Bryce Hager and Caleb Kelly each contributed one hit.

Desmond pitched for the Tigers throughout the game, striking out six.

Loveland

Digging deep, the Tigers rallied on Friday afternoon to defeat Mountain View High School team from Loveland, Colorado.

Torrington found itself ahead, 2-1, with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kelly singled for two RBI.

The Tigers improved their advantage, 5-2, with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Desmond tripled, Bryce Hager singled and Rhett Clarke hit a sacrifice fly for one run each.

Torrington outscored Loveland, 4-3, in the fourth inning to pull ahead, 9-5. A single by Mac Hibben resulted in two runs. Kramer singled for one run while Landre Greiman hit a sacrifice fly for another fourth run.

Three additional runs by the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth inning capped off the win.

Torrington tallied 14 hits against Loveland. Desmond and Hibben set the pace for the Tigers, each posting three hits for two RBI apiece. Kelly totaled two hits for two RBI. Kramer and Garrett Hager both had two hits with one each from Greiman and Bryce Hager.

On the mound, Grady Shields started for the Tigers, striking out three. Colby Sandusky, Mateo Correa and Kramer played relief.

USA Prime

The team from Johnstown, Colorado, proved a tougher nut for Torrington to crack.

USA Prime got out early with three runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead, 3-0.

Torrington responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game, 3-3, following a single by Greiman and double from Hibben.

USA Prime took control of the scoreboard with three runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth.

Torrington collected six hits during the game – two by Hibben and one each from Kramer, Greiman, Desmond and Bryce Hager.

Garrett Hager opened as pitcher for Torrington, striking out two. Sandusky, Kelly and Correa stepped in as relief.

Fort Collins

The game between Torrington and Fort Collins was locked in a scoreless stalemate through the first three innings. Seven runs by Fort Collins in the top of the fourth inning set the momentum for the Colorado team.

Overall, Torrington tallied seven hits against Fort Collins, led by Hibben with three. Kramer, Desmond, Bryce Hager and Shields contributed one hit each.

On the mound, Clarke started for Torrington, striking out two. Hibben and Bryce Hager came in to play relief.
