A hectic weekend of tournament play for the Torrington Thunder 14U softball team in Cheyenne culminated in a big victory against Casper.

Thunder 14U overwhelm Casper at WYCO Tourney

CHEYENNE – The Torrington Thunder 14U girls’ softball team boarded the bus for a whirlwind schedule of four games at the WYCO Tournament hosted by Cheyenne on June 22-23, highlighted by a 12-3 victory against the Casper Rebels on Saturday.

The first game pitted Torrington against USA Explosion, a traveling team from Idaho. The Thunder ultimately came up short, 12-2.

Determined to post a win at the event, Torrington rallied in the second game to defeat Casper on Saturday afternoon.

The next two games came down to the wire with Torrington falling to WYCO Team Baker, 7-5, on Saturday evening before dropping a game to WYCO Team Boyer, 7-4, on Sunday.

USA Explosion

The game between Torrington and USA Explosion found the Idaho team up, 7-2, by the bottom of the third inning. Five additional runs by USA Explosion in the top of the fifth sealed the deal for the Idaho squad.

Torrington tallied six hits against USA Explosion. Kadence Schamel set the pace for the Thunder with two hits for two RBI. Olivia Meyer, Ashlyn Schamel, Cecilia Tapia and Belle Ash each contributed one hit. 

Jadah Jacobson pitched for Torrington throughout the game.

Casper

The Thunder rallied on Saturday afternoon to defeat the Casper Rebels.

Casper found itself ahead, 3-0, in the top of the second inning. Torrington responded with five runs in the bottom of the second to take the initiative, 5-3. 

The Thunder clinched the game with seven runs in the bottom of the third inning while Torrington’s fielders shut out Casper in the top of the fourth.

Overall, the Thunder collected seven hits against Casper. Tapia led the Torrington offense with two hits for three RBI. Ash, Kadence Schamel and Jadyn Chilson each tallied one hit for two RBI apiece while Emily Audette contributed one hit for one RBI.

Kadence Schamel opened as pitcher for Torrington, striking out nine. Ashlyn Schamel stepped in as relief.

Team Barker

The combined 14U teams at the tournament proved to be tough opponents, with the Thunder coming up short against Team Barker on Saturday evening.

Team Barker pulled ahead, 5-0, in the bottom of the first inning. Torrington made a concerted effort to match Team Barker in scoring with three runs in the top of the third.

An additional run by Team Barker in both the third and fourth innings were enough for the combined team to maintain the advantage for the rest of the game even though Torrington battled to close the gap with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Thunder posted four hits against Team Barker – two by Kadence Schamel and one each form Meyer and Tapia.

Ashlyn Schamel served as pitcher during the game, striking out six.

Team Boyer

Torrington won the first inning, 3-0. Team Boyer answered with two runs in the top of the second inning, although Torrington remained ahead, 4-2, with a run in the bottom of the second.

Team Boyer edged ahead with five runs in the fourth inning to clinch the game.

Overall, Torrington collected four hits against Team Boyer, including one each by Kadence Schamel, Tapia, Ash and Karis Walker.

On the mound, Ashlyn Schamel started as pitcher. Jacobson stepped in as relief, striking out one.
