Lancers, Lady Lancers win Lamar College tourney

LAMAR, COLORADO – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers and Lady Lancers both swept the competition at a golf tournament hosted by Lamar Community College from October 3-4.

The Lancers advanced to the top of the leaderboard as a team with a two-day score of 567 strokes (seven over par). The team shot consistently with 285 strokes in the first round and 282 in the second.

The EWC men finished ahead of the runner-up, Otero College, by more than 30 strokes. Otero placed second at 599, followed by Northeastern Junior College in third at 619, McCook Community College fourth at 628 and the host school fifth at 650.

The Lady Lancers also won by a margin of more than 30 strokes. EWC garnered gold with a cumulative score of 704 strokes. The Lady Lancers improved from shooting 360 on Thursday to 344 on Friday.

Otero placed second in the women’s division with 743 strokes while Northeastern Junior College came in third at 832.

“Both teams played great again this week,” coach Zach Smith said. “For the men’s and women’s teams to both win by 30-plus strokes is huge. Especially for the girls, who had a six-stroke lead going into day two and then played great on Friday to win by 39 strokes.”

EWC rose to the challenge on a difficult course, Smith added.

“Lamar can be sneaky and tough at times, especially if they put the pins in some tough places, which they did on Friday,” Smith said. “The teams did a good job of evaluating the pin locations and attacking when they could and pumping the brakes when needed.”

Joshua Chapman won the men’s division, shooting two under par for a two-day gross of 138 strokes. Chapman progressed from 70 strokes in the first round to 68 in the second.

Teammate Braylon Bingham snagged second place, tallying 141 strokes after two days (one over par). Bingham shot 71 on Thursday and 70 on Friday.

Mathis Fortin finished fourth with a score of 143 (+3, 72-71).

Tytan Birchall and Taiki Sugawara tied for fifth at 147 (+7). Birchall shot 72-75 while Sugawara went 74-73.

Freddie Dancox rounded out the EWC men’s team with a ninth-place finish at 148 strokes (+8). Dancox improved from 77 strokes in the first round to 71 in the second.

“We’ve had such a balance on the men’s team in terms of whose week it is to play well,” Smith said. “I was happy for Josh to get the individual win, especially because it was his birthday on October 7. It was also good to get Braylon back towards the top of the leaderboard. He has been such a great golfer during his time here but fell into a bit of a rut for a few weeks. Having him back to playing really good golf has had a great impact.”

Elliann Irick and Georgie Lou Paterakis tied for second place in the women’s division, both shooting a two-day score of 175 (33 over par). Irick and Paterakis each progressed from 89 strokes in the first round to 86 in the second.

Bailey Watson finished fifth on the leaderboard, shooting 177 over two days (+35). Watson also demonstrated marked improvement from Thursday to Friday with 92 and 85 strokes, respectively.

Shayla Clayton took seventh place at 179 strokes (+37), advancing from 92 in the first round to 87 in the second.

Jessica Applegarth placed eighth with a score of 187 (+45, 90-97). Halle Allen came in 12th place at 211 (+69, 114-97).

“Five girls placed in the top 10, which is awesome,” Smith said. “We are in a good place right now but we need to stay focused and keep grinding in order to get better.”

Up next, EWC golfers travel to a tournament hosted by McCook Community College on Thursday and Friday, October 10-11.
