YODER– The Southeast High School Cyclones football team faced several challenges during Homecoming Week. Due to a season forfeit by Guernsey High School, Southeast scrambled to find a team to play.
Natrona County’s junior varsity stepped up to play Yoder on Thursday, October 4. Natrona County fielded a full junior varsity roster with relatively large players and plenty of depth. Southeast played 9-man offense but switched to 11 players on defense.
While Natrona County controlled the scoreboard, there were solid plays by both the Southeast offense and defense. The week will count as a win for the Cyclones due to Guernsey’s forfeit.
“We held out quite a few kids (against Natrona County) and only had one starter on offense and three on defense,” coach Shawn Burkart said. “Since we did not have a JV game last week and again this week, I wanted our junior varsity kids to get most of the playing time and get more game reps. Since we had the forfeit, it was a good time to do this. Natrona had some good sophomores with size that gave us some matchup issues with our younger players.”
By the second half, Southeast was playing a “makeshift offense” due to injuries, Burkart remarked.
“Our kids competed hard and at least we were able to play a game this week.”
In the first quarter on Thursday, junior Liam Haas tackled Natrona County’s runner behind the line of scrimmage during the Mustang’s third drive.
Haas, sophomore quarterback Connor Coxbill and senior William Knowlton picked up positive yards for a first down in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Haas made another tackle for loss on Natrona County’s opening drive.
On special teams, senior Carter Blevins returned Natrona County’s kickoff to the 42-yard line on Southeast’s first possession of the second half.
Blevins returned the ball to the Cyclones’ 29-yard line on Southeast’s third drive of the second half and Knowlton churned up the yards for a first down.
In the fourth quarter, freshman Kaiden Hill picked up positive yards on multiple plays for the Cyclones.
Southeast hosts the annual cross-county rivalry against Lingle-Fort Laramie on Thursday, October 10. Kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
