YODER – The Southeast High School Lady Cyclones dominated Homecoming Week with three conference victories on Friday and Saturday, October 4-5.
Opening the weekend on a high note, Southeast swept 1A Southeast opponent Guernsey-Sunrise, 3-0, on Friday.
Saturday featured back-to-back wins for Southeast against conference adversaries Rock River and Hanna-Elk Mountain (HEM) in 3-0 sweeps.
“We’re playing well as a team,” coach Monica Anderson said. “Last weekend, we started gelling as a team and continued that unity and enjoyment for the game into this weekend. In the first two sets against Rock River and Hanna-Elk Mountain, we were playing our game and controlling the court. The girls stepped on the floor with purpose.”
Southeast subbed in younger players in the third sets on Saturday and the second string “kept the momentum going,” Anderson added.
“It took everyone to have team unity, to be ready to go and do their best this weekend,” Anderson noted. “It’s a blessing as a coach to watch the girls celebrate each other.”
Southeast is currently tied with Lingle-Fort Laramie for the No. 1 spot in the 1A East Quadrant with an undefeated 5-0 conference record.
Guernsey
Southeast opened the first set against Guernsey with a five-point run, including kills by seniors Angie Logsdon and Brooklyn Leithead. Blocks from juniors Hadley Leithead and Keana Llewellyn and sophomore Brylie Booth expanded the Lady Cyclones’ lead, 10-2.
Hadley Leithead aced a serve and Booth and senior Anna Hartman defended the net with blocks. A pair of blocks by Brooklyn Leithead placed Southeast up, 21-7.
A kill by Logsdon resulted in game point, 25-7.
Following some back-and-forth early in the second set, the Lady Cyclones took control at seven with a kill from Booth.
The Lady Cyclones remained ahead with kills by Hadley Leithead, Booth, Logsdon, Hartman and Brooklyn Leithead. Booth scored an ace and Brooklyn Leithead reached up for a block. Hadley Leithead scored game point with a kill, 25-11.
Guernsey found its footing in a neck-and-neck third set. Booth slammed over a kill and broke the final tie at 16. Southeast controlled the scoreboard for the remainder of the set with kills from Hartman, Brooklyn Leithead and Booth, plus two blocks by Booth and an ace from Llewellyn.
Hadley Leithead spiked a kill for game point, 25-21.
Rock River
Southeast controlled the scoreboard from the opening point to game point in both the first and second sets against Rock River.
In the first set, Brooklyn Leithead aced three serves. Logsdon, Hadley Leithead, Booth and Brooklyn Leithead maintained Southeast’s offensive pressure with kills. Hadley Leithead posted one block on defense.
Rock River sent the ball out returning a serve by Brooklyn Leithead for game point, 25-11.
A seven-point run by the Lady Cyclones in the second set widened Southeast’s lead, 21-5. Booth aced a serve and delivered a kill. Brooklyn Leithead powered over a kill and defended the net with a block. Logsdon and Hartman also contributed a kill apiece.
Hartman aced a serve for game point, 25-7.
Southeast’s younger players entered in the third set with kills by sophomores Elizabeth Boche, Bailey Mehling and Haylee Ekwall. Boche also aced a serve.
Mehling scored game point, 25-6, with a kill.
HEM
The Lady Cyclones showed no mercy against HEM in the first set, winning by an overwhelming 25-6 margin.
Four aces from Llewellyn sealed the deal and took Southeast to 24 while a serving error by HEM resulted in game point.
Southeast established a 16-4 lead midway into the second set. Junior Taylor Tregemba opened scoring for the Lady Cyclones with an ace and a dig. Kills by Logsdon, Hadley Leithead, Brooklyn Leithead and Booth took Southeast to 16.
Freshman Abby Boyd aced a serve and the Lady Cyclones pulled ahead, 20-4. HEM sent the ball out returning a serve by Booth for game point, 25-9.
Southeast’s second string once again kept the momentum going in the third set. Mehling powered over a kill to break a deadlock at 13. Llewellyn served up a trio of aces to take Southeast to 24 and a service error by HEM resulted in game point, 25-18.
Southeast hosts the first cross-county rivalry game against Lingle-Fort Laramie on Thursday at 5 p.m.
“We’re excited to play LFL,” coach Anderson said. “We scrimmaged them this summer. We won one set and they won one set. This will be a fun game.
