As the LaGrange 4th of July festivities were well underway, Myrtle was born on the 66 Ranch northeast of LaGrange in 1924, to Burt and Helen (Hagie) Jones, placed in a shoe box and put on the open oven door to keep her warm. Her childhood years growing up were spent at various ranches in Wyoming as her father worked as a ranch hand and her mother as a cook. She graduated High School in LaGrange and went on to the University of Wyoming where she earned her Provisional teaching certificate due to the shortage of teachers during WWII.

Myrtle taught in a one room schoolhouse west of Meriden and went on to teach in Hawk Springs. She married Pete Howery on May 21, 1945, while he was home on leave during WWII. Three days later they were on their way to Florida in Pete’s 1937 Chevy Coupe. As Pete continued his service in Florida, Myrtle worked as a clerk typist on the base and then as a substitute teacher in Fort Meyers. After Pete’s discharge they made LaGrange their home where they raised their two children Bill and Linda.

Myrtle was very active in the LaGrange community, no matter what the need she was there to help, from school parties, bake sales, making costumes, caring for a sick neighbor, babysitting - the list is endless. Her door was open to all to stop by for a cup of coffee or stop for a bite to eat.

Myrtle worked at Brown’s Grocery store, the LaGrange Café, as a scale lady for the Holly Sugar Corporation and as librarian at LaGrange Public School. Myrtle was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 78 years and a member of the United Methodist Church in Torrington.

Myrtle and Pete supported and followed their children in all that they were involved in and Grandson Rob’s endeavors, she then continued to support and attend her Great Grandchildren, Preston, Tyler, and Jordan’s activities.

She is survived by her daughter Linda (Kevin) Weaver, grandson Rob (Tori) Hunt, great-grandsons Dr. Preston (Sunny) Hunt, Tyler (Kerri) Hunt, great-granddaughter Jordan Hunt, great-great-grandson Marcellous Hunt. Granddaughter Natalie Weaver and great-grandsons Briggs and Owen. Granddaughter Courtney (Kyle) Klaassen and great-granddaughter Ellery. Her brother Raymond (Elizabeth) Jones and many nieces and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Pete, son Bill, and her parents and sister Alene.
