Lady Blazers fourth at state, Blazers seventh

RAWLINS – The Torrington High School golf team battled a challenging course, unrelenting winds and tough opponents at the 3A state golf championships hosted by Rochelle Ranch in Rawlins from September 20-21.

The Lady Blazers placed fourth as a team, tallying 648 strokes following two rounds. The Torrington girls shot 317 on Friday and 331 on Saturday.

The Blazers finished seventh overall on the boys’ varsity leaderboard with 717 strokes. The boys improved from 364 in the first round to 353 in the second.

“Rawlins’ course was tough and the wind blew the whole weekend,” coach Jeff Halley said. “I was happy with the way that our kids hung in there. They really battled to keep us in it for both team scores. (Senior) Sara Birdsall had a great day on the first day and was in the top 15 which was a nice surprise. (Freshman) Olivia Edmunds and (senior) Madison Gibson both also shot some of their lowest scores of the year.”

The state tournament concluded the 2024 fall season for Torrington.

“Overall, I was pleased with how our kids improved throughout the season,” Halley said. “We will miss the seniors next season, especially on the girls’ side with so many of them but we are in a good place and continuing to rise up the ranks in the state.”

Birdsall came in 17th place on the varsity girls’ leaderboard, tallying 214 strokes overall. Birdsall shot 100 on Friday and 114 on Saturday.

Senior Madyson Banister placed 18th, shooting 217 strokes. Banister shot consistently at 107 and 110 in each round, respectively.

Fellow senior Kaleigh Waymire took 20th place, collecting 223 strokes. Waymire progressed from 116 strokes in the first round to 107 in the second.

Edmunds came in 22nd place with 225 strokes (110-115) and Gibson earned 24th place at 235 (114-121).

Senior Mason Wilkes led the varsity boys pack with a 21st-place finish. Wilkes totaled 174 strokes, including 91 on Friday and 83 on Saturday.

Junior Caleb Kelly finished 25th, shooting a two-day total of 178. Kelly improved from 93 in the first round to 85 in the second.

Conner Correll, also a junior, took 29th place, finishing with 182 strokes. Corell shot 88 in the first round and 94 in the second.

Sophomore Wyatt Lynde came in 34th place with 187 strokes (96-91) and fellow sophomore Mason Unverzagt placed 36th at 191 (92-99).
