Blazers drop game to Yuma

Posted

YUMA, COLORADO – A long bus ride for the Torrington High School Blazers football team to play the Outlaws in Yuma, Colorado on Friday, September 20 resulted in the Blazers falling to Yuma, 8-3.

Torrington opened scoring with a field goal by junior Holden Hackett early in the first quarter. A tenacious Blazer defense shut out the Outlaws offense in the first, second and third quarters to maintain Torrington’s 3-0 lead into the final quarter.

Yuma’s steady march toward the end zone eventually paid off for the Outlaws with a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Outlaws converted two extra points to place Yuma ahead of Torrington by five points.

“Our defense showed up and was ready to go,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “We held a team that scored 50 points against its opponent the week before to one touchdown. Our interior defense held up well against Yuma’s offensive linemen. Offensively, we cannot turn the ball over four times and not score a touchdown and expect to win.”

Senior Andrew Haffner led the Torrington D-line with 17 defensive points. Haffner tallied five assisted tackles, three solo stops, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery.

Fellow senior Kaden Romig posted 16 defensive points, including eight assisted tackles and four solo tackles.

Jeramiah Haffner, also a senior, tallied 14 defensive points with a total of 12 tackles – 10 assisted and two solo.

Senior Mac Hibben collected seven tackles, including one for loss and broke up a pass. Seniors Nounou Braddy and Kyson Engel both recorded one tackle for loss while senior Nathaniel Stull and junior Landre Greiman each broke up a pass. Greiman forced one fumble.

The Blazer offense totaled 95 yards rushing. Junior Colby Sandusky chewed up 39 yards on five carries. Sophomore Drew Kramer tallied 24 yards rushing on four carriers.

Senior quarterback Ryan Moorehouse completed eight of 19 passes for 56 yards with Stull receiving two passes for 18 yards.

Powerful kicks by Hackett resulted in two touchbacks.

The Blazers travel to play Lander on Friday, September 27 with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
