Lady Blazer golfers second at Wheatland

WHEATLAND – The Torrington High School (THS) golf team entered the second week of the 2024 fall season with strong performances at a tournament hosted by Wheatland from August 23-24.

The Lady Blazers snagged second place as a team, with a cumulative two-day score of 625 strokes. Torrington beat Laramie (697 strokes) and Glenrock (893).

The Blazer boys fielded only three athletes and did not place as a team.

Senior Madyson Banister set the pace for the Lady Blazers, finishing sixth on the leaderboard with an overall score of 199 strokes. Banister shot 100 on Thursday, improving to 99 on Friday.

Fellow senior Mason Wilkes led the Blazers, tying for 12th place with a two-day tally of 169. Wilkes shot 88 in the first round and 81 in the second.

“Wilkes had a great second day to make a run for the boys,” coach Jeff Halley said. “Our girls battled well having all five finish in the top 13.”

Senior Kaleigh Waymire broke into the top 10 in the girls’ division, tying for eighth place with a combined score of 209 strokes. Waymire shot 101 on Thursday and 108 on Friday.

Sara Birdsall, also a senior, took 10th place at 222. Birdsall tallied 109 strokes in the first round and 113 in the second.

Senior Madison Gibson finished 11th, shooting a two-day score of 223. Gibson tallied 115 strokes on Thursday, improving to 108 on Friday.

Freshman Olivia Edmunds rounded out the Lady Blazers squad with a 12th-place finish at 233 strokes. On Thursday, Edmunds shot 113, followed by 120 on Friday.

In the boys’ division, sophomore Wyatt Lynde took 13th place, posting 184 strokes over two days. Lynde shot consistently at 92 in both rounds.

Fellow sophomore Mason Unverzagt came in 19th place with an overall score of 193. Unverzagt shot 91 on Thursday and 102 on Friday.

Up next, the THS golf team travels to compete at a tournament hosted by Gillette from August 29-30. Torrington hosts its fall home tournament at Cottonwood Country Club on Thursday and Friday, September 5-6.
