TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) men’s and women’s golf teams dominated the annual EWC Invite hosted by Cottonwood Country Club in Torrington and Monument Shadows Golf Course in Gering from September 12-13.

The Lancers snagged first place in the men’s division, tallying 563 strokes over two days. Central Wyoming College came in second at 619, followed by McCook Community College in third (626), Otero College fourth (627), Northeastern Junior College fifth (648) and Lamar Community College sixth (658).

The Lady Lancers snagged gold as a team with 668 strokes. EWC beat Otero College at 695 strokes, Central Wyoming (696) and Northeastern (764).

In the men’s competition, sophomores Joshua Chapman and Taiki Sugawara tied for first place on the leaderboard with a cumulative score of 141 strokes (three under par). Chapman shot 70 in the first round and 71 in the second. Sugawara tallied 75 strokes on Thursday, improving to 66 on Friday.

Bailey Watson led the Lady Lancers, clinching first place with a two-day total of 158 strokes. Watson shot consistently at 79 on both days.

Coach Zach Smith called the EWC Invite a “great” weekend for both the Lancers and Lady Lancers.

“The guys got a huge team win and placed eight in the top 10 while the girls got their first team win and an individual winner in Bailey Watson,” Smith added. “Our second men’s team ended up placing second as a team, too. It was an all-around great week for Lancer golf.”

Smith also highlighted the first-place tie between Chapman and Sugawara.

“That was fun to see because those guys are always having a friendly battle at practice,” Smith remarked.

Four Lady Lancers broke into the top 10 at the home invitational in a first for EWC.

“Walking away with our first (women’s) team win in program history was amazing,” Smith said. “The whole team continues to push one another to be better.”
