EWC defeats Otero, Miles City

LA JUNTA, COLORADO ñ The Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lady Lancers returned from a successful weekend on the road with a pair of wins. 

On Thursday, September 12, the Lady Lancers defeated Otero College in La Junta, Colorado, in a five-set battle, 3-2. EWC boarded the bus again on Saturday, September 14, beating Miles Community College in Montana, 3-1.

Otero College

The Lady Lancers threw the first punch against Otero College and won the opening set, 25-20. Otero responded in the second and third sets to win by a 25-18 margin in each.

Both teams left it all on the court in a neck-and-neck fourth set that went beyond 25 and reached a deadlock at 27. The Lady Lancers regained the initiative with two points to win the set, 29-27.

The winner-takes-all fifth set also came down to the wire. Digging deep, the Lady Lancers once against scored two crucial points to win, 17-15.

EWC tallied 60 kills against Otero College, led by sophomore Julia Dolan with 14. Sophomore Siala Unufe and freshman Amarie Huntsman both delivered 13 kills with freshman Una Stepic contributing 11.

Sophomore Boden Liljedahl covered the floor as libero and totaled 20 digs. Fellow sophomore Emma Blackstar played setter and posted 36 assists.

On the service line, freshman Vladana Ristic aced three serves, Stepic two with one apiece by Blackstar and Unufe. 

Defensively, Unufe set the pace for EWC with six blocks. Dolan made four blocks with three apiece by Stepic, freshman Adisyn Rollins and freshman Annika Cantrell.

Miles City

Miles Community College won the first set, 25-18. 

Battling back, EWC took the second and third sets, winning each with a 25-19 margin.

The Lady Lancers pulled ahead by two points in the fourth set following a stalemate at 25 to win, 27-25.

Huntsman led EWC in kills against Miles Community College with 15. Stepic tallied 13 kills, Dolan 12 and Unufe 11.

Blackstar delivered 27 assists and Liljedahl contributed 19 digs.

Stepic aced three serves while Liljedahl, sophomore Baylor Rodgers, freshman Clara Hayhanen, Blackstar and Unufe each served up one ace.

On defense, Unufe and Dolan both tallied two blocks with one apiece by freshman Mina Milivojevic and Huntsman.

The Lady Lancers host the Wyo-Braska Tournament this weekend. EWC played Colorado Northwestern Community College on Thursday. The Lady Lancers hit the court against Miles Community College on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a game against Trinidad State College on Saturday at 11 a.m.
