DOUGLAS – Wyoming high school fall sports are underway as golfers hosted the first events of the 2024 season the previous week. The Torrington High School golf team officially kicked of its season at the Douglas Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday, August 14-15.

The Blazer boys fielded six athletes and picked up fifth place overall with a cumulative score of 710 strokes, beating Cheyenne East, the host school, Glenrock, Rawlins and Cheyenne South.

Three athletes represented the Lady Blazers in Douglas and the Torrington girls finished third as a team with a two-day total of 666 strokes. The Lady Blazers placed ahead of Cheyenne Central, Natrona County High School and Wheatland.

Head coach Jeff Halley praised the team’s season-opening effort at the Douglas Community Club.

“We had a good weekend starting out,” Halley said. “Most of our kids had at least one personal best round. We were a little shorthanded, but I thought we really had some good efforts from the athletes we took. We are looking at good things from these teams this season.”

Senior Mason Wilkes set the pace for the Blazer boys, capturing seventh place overall with a combined score of 161 strokes. Wilkes shot 84 in the first round, improving to 77 strokes on Thursday.

Two Lady Blazers broke into the top 10, led by senior Madyson Banister in eighth place with an overall score of 200. Banister shot 101 in the opening round, progressing to 99 strokes in the second.

Senior Kaleigh Waymire advanced to ninth place on the leaderboard with a two-day score of 203. Waymire shot consistently  with 102 on Wednesday and 101 on Thursday.
