Crafting at the library

TORRINGTON – Each summer, all the county libraries in Wyoming receive an adult book and a children’s book for quilting. These books are donated by the Wyoming State Quilt Guild.

This year, Goshen County Library decided to set aside a day where they will read the book to the children and then do a corresponding activity. Over the weekend, the children of Goshen County were invited to listen to this story and practice making quilt blocks with patterned paper.

Terry and Katrina Haines, a grandmother and granddaughter duo, were the leaders for the event this year. Terry is a member of the local quilt guild and Katrina works at the library and is a very avid seamstress. They both did a great job teaching the children about quilting.

“You know, we love to share our gift because we love to sew,” Terry Haines shared.

Although this weekend was the only opportunity for the children’s quilting story time this year, the library has a regularly scheduled story time and craft. The dates and times for this can be found on the Goshen County Library website. They have a number of fantastic events, not only for children, but for adults as well.

“We have a kids craft every Monday on Maker Monday. We run from 4:00 to 6:00, so, you know, kids can come in at any point between 4:00 and 6:00 and they can come make the craft to their hearts content and then we have an adult crafting night every first and third Tuesday of every month so we have adults who want to come make things, hang out with other people who are making things, they can come to that,” Katrina Haines stated.

“And we bring our own projects,” Terry Haines adds.

“That runs from 5 to 7 or 6:30. And then we have a bunch of events that just kind of happened as one offs, you know, this month the kids are doing there’s the 4th to 8th grade page to screen book club for The Wild Robot, they’re meeting on the 13th to talk about book and then they, as long as the theatre here has it, they’re going to go see the movie hopefully on the 29th of September. As well, we have a sort of an event about money like for kids talking money,” Katrina continues.

These are just a few things they are doing at the local library. There are still more upcoming event.

Outside of the library, there is a local quilt guild available to anyone who may be interested.

“For people who want to learn to quilt, our quilt guild meets once a month and we welcome beginners anytime,” Terry Haines shared.

The final thing the Haines women wanted to share was how the library is working on expanding their makerspace in the activity center. They are adding a number of creative resources.

“Funded by the McMurry library grant, we are working on creating a makerspace in our library that will include a sewing machine for people to come use, as well as a glow forge laser cutter, and 3D printer, and cricket maker. It’s currently in progress but it will eventually be over in the activity center,” Katrina Haines stated.

Overall, the children’s quilting event was a success, the children looked quite happy. The Goshen County Library has a ton of new things coming for all age groups to do and everyone is highly encouraged to join in.
