Lady Blazers tennis defeats Cheyenne East

Tennis team hosts senior recognition night at final home match

TORRINGTON – The Torrington High School boys and girls tennis teams hosted both Cheyenne Central and Cheyenne East for the final home matches of the season at the Mary Perkins Tennis Courts on Tuesday, September 10.

The Lady Blazers won their match against Cheyenne East, 3-2, in singles and doubles sets that came down to the wire. The Blazer boys came up short against Cheyenne East, 5-0.

Both the Torrington boys and girls fell to Cheyenne Central, 5-0, in the first matches on Tuesday afternoon.

“Yesterday, when we played Central and East, we did get the outcomes we hoped for,” coach Lauren Shields said. “The girls won the dual with East going 3-2 with (senior) Madix McIntosh and (junior) Laney Grubbs winning their singles matches, along with the No. 3 doubles team of (juniors) Addison Hansen and Sinai Hernandez winning their match. Laney’s match was a ralley-fest. It lasted three-and-a-half hours, but she came away with a win in three sets.”

Senior recognition

Tuesday featured senior recognition, with the Blazers and Lady Blazers honoring its upperclassmen, including Ty Fogle, Elijah Hatch, Marcus Jones, Madix McIntosh, Gabe Posten, Josiah Steinbrecher, Oliver Szabo and Skyler Thomas.

Szabo is a foreign exchange student and played junior varsity for Torrington.

“He is a very quiet, respectful, kind young man,” Shields said.

Fogle played three years of tennis for Torrington.

“I have really enjoyed having Ty on the team,” Shields said. “She has improved over the years and really loves playing tennis.”

Steinbrecher also played three years of tennis for the Blazers.

“Josiah just makes me smile,” Shields noted. “His play is unorthodox and he really covers the court well and is a great teammate.”

Hatch is a third-year veteran on the Torrington tennis team.

“Elijah is a great athlete and tennis has been somewhat easy for him to learn the basics,” Shields added. “Elijah is fun to watch and he has matured more this year and seems to be more in control of his emotions on the court.”

McIntosh worked her way up from No. 3 doubles as a sophomore to No. 1 singles as a senior.

“Madix works hard in and out of practice on her game,” Shields said. “She hates to lose and I really enjoy her sense of honesty and blunt nature. She has made good friends and memories over the years.”

Thomas played No. 1 singles for the Blazers his senior year.

“Skyler is a great athlete and super coachable kid,” Shields remarked. “I ask Skyler to do lots of things to help out the team and he is always willing.”

Posten played all four years of high school for the Blazers.

“I met Gabe when he was in preschool and have had the privilege to watch him grow as a human and tennis player,” Shields said. “Gabe has improved his serve speed and groundstrokes over the years and has really improved his volleying this year.”

Jones’ career spanned four years with the Blazers.

“I have known Marcus since he was five or six years old and he has really grown and matured as a person as well,” Shields added. “Marcus makes some amazing shots that you don’t think he is going to make. He worked really hard this summer to improve his game.”

The No. 2 singles match between junior Laney Grubbs and East’s Ashley Smith also came down to the wire. Smith won the first set, 6-3. Grubbs battled back to turn the tables in the second set, 6-4, before winning the third set, 6-3.
