Tennis conference heats up

LARAMIE – The Torrington High School tennis team squared off against three conference opponents over the course of a busy, two-day schedule.

The action began with Torrington traveling to Laramie on Friday, September 6. The Blazer boys varsity team fell to the Plainsmen, 4-1, with the Lady Blazers coming up short, 5-0.

“Laramie always has a solid team,” coach Lauren Shields said. “Their No. 1 singles boy has finished second (at state) the past two years.”

Senior Elijah Hatch won the No. 2 singles match against Laramie, 6-3 and 6-4.

“Elijah played well,” Shields added. “He realized early his opponents’ weaknesses and worked to exploit them.”

On Saturday, Torrington traveled to Sheridan to play both the host school and Powell. The Lady Blazers and Blazers each fell to Sheridan, 5-0.

The matches against Powell were closer, with the Blazers coming up short by a single match, 3-2. The Lady Blazers fell to Powell, 4-1.

Senior Madix McIntosh won the No. 1 girls’ singles match against Powell, 7-6 and 6-2.

“Madix played well and worked hard to be consistent and make her opponent hit one more ball in order to beat her,” Shields said. “She played good tennis.”

In the boys’ matches against Powell, Hatch won the No. 2 singles, 7-5 and 6-2.

“Elijah played a little more unconventional in this match,” Shields noted. “He was lobbing quite a bit but his objective was to find ways to win and that worked for him.”

Seniors Gabe Posten and Marcus Jones won the No. 2 doubles match, 6-4 and 6-3.

“This team worked hard and battled in this match,” Shields said. “They had good serve returns and volleys to put them in a place to win.”
