NEWCASTLE – Propelled by seven rushing touchdowns by four different Trailblazers, Torrington roared back after being behind 10-7 on the road Friday against Newcastle to pick up the 55-10 win.
The Dogies scored first on a one-yard touchdown run but the Blazers bounced back when Josh Posten reached the end zone on a 26-yard run. The first points in the second quarter went to Newcastle on a 29-yard field goal, but then it was all Torrington.
Breyden Bivens took a quarterback sneak for a yard to score seven for Torrington. Bryan Lemmon scored two touchdowns in the second quarter, with one in the form of a 63-yard run and the other a 14-yard reception from Bivens.
Coming out of the break with a 27-10 lead, Posten recorded his second touchdown on the night on a five-yard dash. Lemmon again found the end zone on a six-yard rush to put the Blazers up 41-10 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, Lemmon scored his fourth touchdown of the night on a nine-yard scamper. Casey Britton finished up the scoring with an eight-yard run to seal Torrington’s 55-10 victory.
As a team, according to the stats compiled by KGOS/KERM, the Blazers racked up 313 yards on the ground on 35 rushes. Posten led the way in both rushes (12) and rushing yards (125). He was second on the team in rushing touchdowns with two on the night. Lemmon toted the rock nine times, making every carry count with 93 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Ryan Johnson was third for Torrington in the ground game with 43 yards on three carries.
Lemmon was also the top receiver, racking up 83 yards and a touchdown through the air on only three receptions. Johnson, Cade Schwartzkopf and Dylan Waller combined to haul in four receptions for 71 yards.
Bivens went 6-for-12 on the night, tossing for 173 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Nathan Stitt and Sam Firminhac also attempted a pass apiece, with both falling incomplete.
On top of his two-touchdown night, Posten was all over the field on defense, accounting for 10 tackles and a pass breakup. Lemmon also carried his big night to the defensive side of the ball, filling his stat line with five tackles and three tackles-for-loss. Josh Kingsley recorded five tackles and played a role in special teams by blocking a punt. Braden Meecham found himself an interception off the tip from Jacob Wamboldt.
The Blazers improved to 2-1 on the season with their win over the Dogies. Torrington returns to Wiseman Field on Friday in their Military Appreciation Night, with the kickoff against Lander slated for 7 p.m.
