Critters rule at donkey basketball

Posted

LINGLE – Folks filled the gym at Lingle-Fort Laramie (LFL) High School to witness an important event in sports history.

The talented LFL Lady Doggers and Doggers varsity squads yielded their space to exceptionally less gifted teams of players at the school’s donkey basketball tournament on April 19.

Sponsored by the LFL Student Council, donkey basketball featured critters from Dairyland Donkeyball in Wisconsin.

While the donkeys proved skillful at moving from one end of the court to the other, the players struggled to stay on their mounts and get the basketball in the hoop.

Donkeys frequently reminded athletes to keep their heads in the game with a swift kick or a few bucks to the delight of fans.

“Our goal was to bring something new, fun and entertaining into the community,” said LFL Student Council advisor Erin Estes. “ There is a lot of value in getting together as a community to just have fun and cut loose.”

The event was a fundraiser for the LFL Student Council, and Estes thanked students, parents, staff and community members for making the night possible.

The evening opened with players on the team Kicking Axes squaring off against It’s On Like Donkey Kong. The final scoreboard favored Donkey Kong, 16-2.

In the second game, the Ba-Donk-A-Donks hit the court to take on the Jack Wagons. The Jack Wagons trounced the Ba-Donk-A-Donks, 14-7.

Advancing to the championship game, the Jack Wagons defeated the Donkey Kongers by a wide margin.
