Asmus breaks 44-year old 400-meter record

SCOTTSBLUFF ñ Torrington High School runners, jumpers and throwers raised the bar at the Scottsbluff Twilight Invitational on April 19, returning home with a bag full of hardware and new personal records.

The Lady Blazers beat six other teams at the competition to capture second place on the leaderboard with 119 points. The Blazer boys secured fourth place with 72 points.

Sophomore Brooklyn Asmus snagged gold in three events trouncing the competition in sprinting  and mid-distance races.

Asmus ran the girls’ 400-meters for the first time this season and crossed the finish line with a new Torrington High School record  at 58.95 seconds. Jackie Cruickshank set the previous record of 59.26 seconds in 1980.

 Asmus went on to win the 100-meter finals, posting a time of 12.22 seconds – 0.63 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Alissa Morales of Gering.

Clocking the 200-meter finals in at 25.13 seconds, Asmus pulled into first place with 1.69 seconds to spare over the competition. 

Senior Tyler Bennick confidently stepped into the throwing ring to win both the shot put and discus. 

Hitting a mark of 54 feet, 7 inches in the shot put, Bennick scooped up first place with a three-inch margin over the second-place finisher, Campbell County’s Raynor Ranum.

In the discus, Bennick clinched gold with a mark of 139-11, pulling ahead of the competition by more than four feet.

Sophomore Trishell Pontarolo snapped up first place in the girls’ triple jump with a leap of 33-05 – six inches ahead of the runner-up, Joslyn Hopkins of Bayard.

Crossing the finish line for the 100-meter hurdles in 16.74 seconds, sophomore Natalie Hawes snagged gold in the event. Hawes completed the race with a 0.47-second lead over the second-place finisher, Campbell County’s Kaydence Kinney.

Senior Zabdiel Munoz won the boys’ 3200-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 55.18 seconds, beating Asher Saka of Alliance by more than 11 seconds.

In the boys’ triple jump, junior Evan Hellus secured first place, reaching a mark of 40-00, three inches ahead of the runner-up, Alliance’s Jonah Amill.

“It was nice to get a meet in considering the weather,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “The kids got out there and competed well to make the best of the meet. We moved a few girls into the 400 to give us more options, and each of the athletes did a great job in the event.”

Girls top eight

Senior Alyssa Wondercheck earned hardware in three events. In the long jump, Wondercheck advanced to second place with a leap of 16-00 ½.

Wondercheck went on to capture third place in the 100-meter finals, timing in at 13.15 seconds. Posting a time of 1:03.68 in the 400-meters, Wondercheck placed third in the event.

Pontarolo returned with hardware in three additional events. The sophomore crossed the finish line in fourth place in the 300-hurdles with a time of 51.00 seconds.

In the 200-meter finals, Pontarolo achieved sixth place, posting a time of 28.55 seconds. 

Pontarolo took fifth place in the long jump, hitting a mark of 15-06 ½.

Hawes pulled into second place in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking in at 47.81 seconds. Competing in the 400-meters for the first time this season, Hawes earned fourth place at 1:04.71.

Representing Torrington in the 3200-meters, sophomore Callie Taylor secured second place with a time of 13:15.72.

Junior Tiffany Krueger obtained fifth place in the 1600-meters, timing in at 6:18.02.

In throwing events, junior Teryn Stokes finished third in the shot put, clearing 34-01, and placed seventh in the discus at 86-08.

Freshman Esperanza Chavez took third place in the pole vault with a leap of 8-00.

The girls’ 4x800-meter relay team – Krueger, Taylor, Chavez and freshman Ava Mattis – came in second place at 11:54.02.

Boys top eight

Freshman Beau Martinez snagged fourth place in the 300-hurdles, posting a time of 48.05 seconds, and placed eighth in the 110-hurdles at 20.70 seconds.

Fellow freshman Drew Kramer also picked up medals in two events. Hitting a mark of 39-03 in the triple jump, Kramer placed third in the event.

Kramer went on to capture seventh place in the 200-meter finals at 24.57 seconds.

Hellus opened the meet with a second-place finish in the long jump at 19-02. The sophomore went on to place fourth in the 200-meter finals with a time of 24.38 seconds.

In the 800-meters, Munoz came in fourth place, clocking in at 2:08.90. Junior Tyler Nicolay took eighth in the event with a time of 2:18.70.

Seniors Trey Parriott and Brayden Frazier broke into the top eight in the shot put. Parriott clinched fourth place, at 47-01, with Frazier placing sixth at 45-00.

Relay highlights included a sixth-place finish for senior Jorey Asmus, sophomore Brady Dagen, freshman Matthew Rogers and sophomore Travis Nobs in the 4x400-meter relay at 4:08.41.

Freshman Ace Heron, Kramer, Hellus and Nobs finished seventh in the 4x100-meter with a time of 47.53 seconds.

Several athletes on the Torrington track team competed at the Best of the West hosted by Scottsbluff on Tuesday. Results from the meet were not available at press time. Athletes will compete at the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper on Friday.
