Shields reaches quarterfinals in No. 1 singles bracket

GILLETTE – The Torrington High School tennis teams wrapped up the 2022 season over the weekend at the Wyoming State High School Tennis Tournament.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams picked up three wins each.

Senior Jacee Shields was the lone THS athlete to win their opening round match.

Shields picked up a 6-2, 6-2 opening round win over Cody’s Hudson Selk. Shields lost in the quarterfinal round to Natrona County High School’s Maria Sanchez De Lamadrid and to Rock Springs’ Karli Nandrup.

The No. 1 doubles team of Russell and Hurley and No. 3 doubles team of McIntosh and Foy also picked up wins for the Lady Blazers.

Russell and Hurley defeated Rawlins 6-1, 6-3 for their lone win of the weekend in the first round of the consolation bracket. McIntosh and Foy also scored their lone win at state on the consolation bracket with a win over Natrona County High School 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The Lady Blazers finished 14th with 2.5 points. Kelly Walsh won the team title with 68 points, while Sheridan was second with 48.

In the boys’ division, No. 1 singles player Ben Firminhac and No. 2 singles player Adam Bartlett and the No. 2 doubles team of Elijah Hatch and Remington Bremer scored one win apiece.

All three of the wins came in the first round of the consolation bracket after an opening round loss.

Firminhac defeated Thunder Basin’s Austin Youngs 6-1, 6-0, while Bartlett knocked off Campbell County’s Justin Gibson 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, Elijah Hatch and Remington Bremer picked up a win over Natrona County 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The Blazers finished 12th with three points. Jackson won the team title with 49 points, while Laramie was second with 41.
