Epilepsy symposium in Sheridan aims to educate, empower and connect

COLORADO & WYOMING – The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado & Wyoming (EFCOWY) is excited to announce, in partnership with Epilepsy Foundation of Montana, the Epilepsy Connect Symposium at Sheridan College in Wyoming, August 24. Raising awareness and reducing the stigma of epilepsy through education can help those with epilepsy get the healthcare and support they need to overcome challenges and thrive. Chances are that someone you know has epilepsy. During a lifetime, 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy, and 1 in 10 will have a seizure.

The one-day event features a presentation by Dr. Allen Gee MD, a neurologist serving Northern Wyoming delivering a presentation titled, Personalized, Precision NeuroHealth: Digital Assessments & AI; and Karen Graf MSN, RN-BC from Billings, MT presenting Epilepsy: The Role of the School Nurse on the Healthcare Team. The agenda includes an additional speaker, a panel discussion, Seizure First Aid certification training, and lunch for attendees. This event is designed for people with epilepsy, caregivers and the public. Those interested in attending can register on the EFCOWY website,www.epilepsycoloradowyoming.org. Regional health and education non-profits and agencies are also invited to register for the event and participate in our networking and vendor fair, giving attendees the opportunity to make valuable connections with local healthcare providers and allied nonprofits.

The Seizure Recognition and First Aid (SFA) certification training session provided at the Symposium is designed to prepare school personnel, first responders, and caregivers with specialized training to recognize and respond appropriately to people suffering from seizures. The education and training offered at the symposium benefits communities in important ways. For example, at the K-12 level, those trained in Seizure First Aid can help create a safer environment, enabling children to overcome obstacles related to seizure disorders so they can thrive academically. Children perform better in school when they feel safe and supported, fostering students’ positive physical and mental well-being, improving academic performance, participation, and school attendance rates.

EFCOWY is the leader in connecting, educating, and empowering to improve the lives of everyone affected by epilepsy. For 60 years, the Foundation has brought hope and opportunities to thousands of children, adults, families, friends, and caregivers struggling with the profound effects of epilepsy. We connect people to healthcare providers, support networks, and developing supportive communities. We educate schools, employers, and the community at large, to reduce stigma and raise awareness. And we empower people affected by epilepsy with knowledge, resources, and advocacy to live their best lives.
