Lancers sign for the next level

TORRINGTON – Eight Eastern Wyoming College Lancers, including four women’s basketball players, three volleyball players and a golfer, have recently signed letters of intent to continue their education and athletic careers at NCAA schools.
Sarah Bersang spent time on the floor in 27 games for the EWC women’s basketball team this winter. She averaged 13.9 points, 3.3 boards and 2.2 assists per game. She shot 40 percent from the field, including 30 percent from behind the arc, and 72 percent from the charity stripe. Throughout her two years at EWC, Bersang took the floor in 54 games, averaging 12.6 points, 2.9 boards, 2.3 assists and 2 steals per game.
Bersang put pen to paper to attend and play for the University of Idaho (Div. I).
“They offered me a full-ride because they liked the way I played and my style fits in very well,” Bersang said. “It’s an up-tempo game and they like to drive and kick it out or go all the way to the rim and that’s my No. 1 goal.”
Carna Prokic is set to continue her career at Georgian Court University (Div. II) in Lakewood, N.J. This past season, Prokic shot 37 percent from the floor and 31 percent from behind the arc. She averaged 9.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Through her two years for the Lady Lancers, Prokic tallied up 8.3 points, 3.2 boards, 1.6 assists and 1.9 steals
“I think I had good communication with the coach there and they really liked me,” Prokic said of Georgian Court. “Their college is so good and they have a good basketball program there.”

Emily Evans is taking her talents to the University of Alaska Fairbanks (Div. II). She tied for the team lead in scoring this winter, averaging 14.3 points per game. She shot better from behind the arc (42 percent) than she did from the field (41 percent). Rounding out her stat sheet, Evans accounted for 4.5 boards, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
“I went up there for a weekend and really enjoyed it,” Evans said of her time in Alaska. “The team was really awesome and the campus was nice.”
The other Lady Lancer to lead the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game this past winter, Anna Perez Gomez, is heading to Division I’s Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. On top of shooting 53 percent from the field, Gomez averaged 3.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Over the past two winters, Gomez has averaged 10.5 points 2.9 boards, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
“The coaches were really interested in me. The best thing was how they treated me – how they were interested in me,” Gomez said. “You could feel that they knew how I played and they told me how I could fit into the program.”
EWC’s Carmen Carvajal is set to attend Chicago State University, a Division I school in Chicago, Ill. As a Lady Lancer last fall, Carvajal was a powerhouse at the net, averaging 3.77 kills per set. She rounded out her stat sheet with 388 total digs (3.18/set), 17 blocks and 28 assists. The sophomore led EWC in points per set, at 4.2.
Throughout her career, Carvajal averaged 3.47 kills and 4.0 points per set.
Carvajal’s teammate, Lauren Hastings, is heading to Division II’s Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla. During her time at EWC, Hastings played in more than 200 sets, averaging 1.16 kills and 1.7 points per set. This past season, Hastings amassed 132 kills, 10 assists, 105 digs, 25 blocks and 200 points.
“I choose OPSU because I liked the atmosphere on campus and on the volleyball team,” Hastings said. “They have my degree and I like the coach and am excited to help built the program.”
Rounding out the volleyball players heading to a bigger program, Shelby Welsh is continuing her career at Lakeland University (Div. III) in Plymouth, Wis. This past season, Welsh, like Carvajal, spent most of her time at the net, averaging 1.93 kills and 2.1 points per game. As a Lady Lancer, Welsh racked up 673 kills, 36 assists, 408 digs, 18 blocks and 721.5 points.
Joining Carvajal at Chicago State, Adrian Torres-Ruiz has signed to play golf for the Cougars. In recent action, Torres-Ruiz took sixth (80) at Central Wyoming’s tournament, tied for ninth at EWC’s home tournament (78, 75) and tied for seventh at the Northeastern Junior College tournament (73, 75). Torrez-Ruiz has been a staple for the Lancer golf team that is set to attend the NJCAA National Tournament on May 16-19.
