TORRINGTON – After a quick shot of winter weather forced the Torrington High School tennis teams to move back their final home tennis match of the season, the Lady Blazers split with Cheyenne Central and Cheyenne East to wrap up the regular season Monday afternoon.

“We finished the season off with two tough opponents,” THS coach Curtis Birkley said.

The Lady Blazers opened the day suffering a sweep at the hands of the Central Indians, however the Torrington girls battled back to sweep Cheyenne East, 5-0.

Sera Glass, No. 1 singles, defeated Nedra Mcllwain 6-0, 6-1, while Jenessa Derby, No. 2 singles, defeated Sydney O’Brien, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, Tyne Stokes and Jacee Shields won 6-2, 6-4, while Trisha Cates and Bethany Wunibald were victorious 6-3, 6-3. The third team of Sydney Harris and Theona Haines won 6-3, 6-2.

In the boys’ division, the Blazers fell 4-1 in each match.

Against Central, Aidyn Saucedo, No. 1 singles, defeated Justin Van Kirk 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 for the Blazers’ lone win.

Against East, the lone win went to the No. 1 doubles team of Cody Clayton and Gabe Russell 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

“Against East both boys and girl played well,” Birkley said. “Stand out matches were Saucedo’s second three setter of the night, and under the lights with a third set with Firminhac and Bartlett.”

The Blazers travel to the South Regional Tournament Friday and Saturday in Green River. Play begins at 8 a.m. both days.
