Lady Blazer tennis sweeps Gillette trip

GILLETTE – The Torrington High Schools girls’ tennis team opened the season with a pair of wins on a road trip to Gillette on Saturday.

The Lady Blazers scored a 5-0 win over Campbell County High School and a 4-1 victory over Thunder Basin High School, while the boys’ team suffered a pair of 5-0 losses.

“It was great to see the kids compete on Saturday,” coach Curtis Birkley said. “Our girls came out and worked really hard sweeping Campbell County High School and then going 4-1 against Thunder Basin.”

Sera Glass scored a 2-1 (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) win in No. 1 singles action, while Jenessa Derby won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Tyne Stokes and Jacee Shields won 2-1 (6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5), while Trisha Cates and Bethany Wunibald were victorious 6-2, 6-4. The No. 3 doubles team of Sydney Harris and Theona Haines won their by forfeit.

In the boys’ division, the Blazers suffered a 5-0 loss.

No. 2 singles player Isaac Bartlett was the lone Blazer to win a set. He opened the match with a 6-4 win before ultimately falling 4-6, 1-6, 2-6.

Aidyn Saucedo, the No. 1 singles player, fell 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles action, Cody Clayton and Gabe Russell lost 6-0, 6-0, while Ben Firminhac and Adam Bartlett lost 6-1, 6-1. Torrington didn’t have a No. 3 doubles team.

Later that day, Glass and Derby picked up wins against Thunder Basin, while Stokes and Shields and Cates and Wunibald scored wins in doubles action.

In the boys’ action, the Blazers fell 5-0.

“Our boys did some really good stuff getting out and working hard for each point,” Birkley said. “We have some newcomers on our boys’ team that have stepped up and also have some guys filling positions they haven’t played before.”

The Torrington tennis teams will be at home against Rawlins at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20.
