Four Lady Lancers earn accolades

TORRINGTON – Four different Lady Lancers earned Region IX postseason honors that were announced after the Region IX tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb. on March 9-11.
Emily Evans and Anna Perez Gomez were named all-region for the south subregion. Evans was a solid shooter for EWC, knocking down 41 percent from the field, 42 percent from deep and 76 percent from behind the arc. She averaged 14.3 points per game. Evans, who started in all 34 games for the Lady Lancers this winter, rounded out her stat sheet with 4.5 boards, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
Gomez matched Evans in the scoring column to lead the team, racking up 14.3 points per contest. She averaged over five made baskets per game and shot 53 percent from the field. Gomez was on the floor for almost 27 minutes per game, behind only Evans who played 31 minutes per game. Outside of scoring, Gomez amassed 3.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Sarah Bersang was named to the Region IX all-defensive team. She averaged 13.9 points, 3.3 boards, 2.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

EWC had three women make the all-tournament team. The Lady Lancers, who finished as runner-ups at the Region IX tournament, snagged wins over Western Wyoming Community College and Trinidad State Junior College before suffering a loss in the championship game against Western Nebraska Community College.
Bersang, Evans and Carna Prokic were recognized for their efforts throughout the three games in Scottsbluff.
Evans was the top scorer during the tournament for EWC, averaging 16 points per game, including a 23-point performance in the championship against the Lady Cougars. During the final weekend of the season, she also chipped in seven boards, two assists and a steal per game.
Bersang contributed 13 points, four boards and two assists per game during the tournament. Prokic averaged 10 points, six rebounds and two assists per game.
Evans, Bersang, Prokic and Gomez led the Lady Lancers to a 22-12 record this winter. EWC went to the Region IX title game for the first time since 1979, even though it resulted in a loss.
The four Lady Lancers who earned accolades are sophomores so EWC will need other girls to step up and lead next year’s team.
