Lancers drop games to CWC, Northwest

TORRINGTON – Conference play continued for the Eastern Wyoming College (EWC) Lancers with back-to-back home games against Central Wyoming College on February 9 and a Saturday matchup against Northwest College.

Central Wyoming College controlled the scoreboard in the first half to pull ahead, 31-18, as the teams headed for the locker rooms.

Undaunted, the Lancers battled back in the second half, outscoring Central Wyoming, 41-40. EWC’s effort ultimately came up short with Central Wyoming posting the win, 71-59.

A close first half between the Lancers and Northwest College ended with Northwest up by several possessions, 51-43, at halftime.

A sustained effort by the Lancers to close the gap in the second half resulted in EWC topping Northwest in scoring, 47-44, to briefly move into the lead. Northwest managed to edge back up, however, and won by only two possessions, 95-90.

“It was a tough loss on Friday to Central,” head coach Tom Andersen said. “Our defense played better, but we shot 20 percent the first half to put ourselves in a hole and were outscored by 15 points from the free-throw line. Saturday was another tough loss. We played well but lost a close one to Northwest. We rallied in the second half to take the lead but fell.”

Freshman Henos Fitwi led the Lancers in scoring against Central Wyoming College with 12 points. Sophomore Micah Glover and freshman Makhiah Tarver each tallied 10 points.

On the boards, Tarver made eight rebounds with freshman Khayree Rashed totaling six.

Four Lancers posted double digits against Northwest College, led by Tarver with 22 points. Glover netted 18 points, freshman Jules Teboul 13 and fellow freshman Nick KwoKam Ngomo 11. Tarver and Teboul both tallied nine rebounds. Tarver deliverd six assists with five by Fitwi.
