Lady Cyclones post 4-0 undefeated weekend

LUSK – A victorious weekend for the Southeast High School Lady Cyclones volleyball team commenced with Southeast defeating 1A conference rival Niobrara County High School in a 3-0 sweep at an away game on Friday, September 27.

Southeast maintained its momentum into the Mitchell Invitational on Saturday to post an undefeated record against three Nebraska opponents. The Lady Cyclones beat Bayard, Mitchell and Gordon-Rushville each by a 2-0 sweep.

“It was a really good weekend,” coach Monica Anderson said. “The biggest area of growth I saw was that the team played very unified all weekend – every girl was ready to go and do their best. All of the girls at the net were ready to put the ball away and our hitting percentage was way up. Having that attack mentality and being smart with the ball made all the games steady throughout.”

The back row demonstrated “great passes,” Anderson added, in addition to receiving well with great digs.

“We communicated well all weekend and the team is just clicking,” Anderson said.

Niobrara County

The beginning of the first set between Southeast and Niobrara County saw the lead switch several times. The Lady Cyclones pulled ahead, 3-2, with a kill from senior Brooklyn Leithead.

Sophomore Brylie Booth slammed over a kill and the set reached a tie at four. The Lady Cyclones remained ahead with a block and kill from senior Anna Hartman. 

Niobrara County edged ahead, 8-7, before Southeast matched its opponent in scoring at eight with a kill by senior Angie Logsdon. 

The Lady Cyclones went on a three-point run with two aces by Booth and a kill from Brooklyn Leithead.

The set reached another deadlock at 11. A serving error by Niobrara County placed Southeast up, 12-11. The Lady Cyclones took control of the scoreboard with kills by junior Hadley Leithead and Booth and blocks from Hadley Leithead and fellow junior Keana Llewellyn.

Logsdon scored game point, 25-15, with a kill.

Southeast dominated the scoreboard from the opening point in the second set. Early points by the Lady Cyclones included blocks from Hadley Leithead and Booth and kills by Logsdon, Hadley Leithead, Booth and Hartman.

Southeast won the third set by a 25-12 margin.

Logsdon set the pace for the Southeast offense with 10 kills. Hadley Leithead and Booth both tallied eight kills.

Booth aced five serves while junior Taylor Tregemba served three aces. Hadley Leithead led on defense with five kills. Tregemba played libero and totaled 10 digs while Llewellyn delivered 30 assists as setter.

Mitchell Invite

Southeast defeated Bayard in the first match, 25-13 and 25-10.

Logsdon and Hartman led the Lady Cyclones offense against Bayard with six kills apiece. Hadley Leithead and Brooklyn Leithead both aced two serves while the pair each tallied three blocks.

Booth and Tregemba covered the floor with five digs apiece and Llewellyn posted 24 assists.

The Lady Cyclones went on to trounce Mitchell in two sets, 25-12 and 25-18.

Hadley Leithead and Brooklyn Leithead led offensively with six kills apiece. Logsdon aced four serves and Hadley Leithead reached up for three blocks. Logsdon, Tregemba and Booth covered the floor with six digs apiece. Llewellyn tallied another 19 assists.

Southeast concluded the invitational on a high note, defeating Gordon-Rushville, 25-23 and 25-13.

In the first set, Southeast took an early lead, 3-2, following a kill by sophomore Bailey Mahling. A kill by Brooklyn Leithead widened the Lady Cyclones’ lead, 6-4. Booth defended the net with a block and another kill by Brooklyn Leithead placed Southeast up, 17-15.

Aces by Tregemba, Brooklyn Leithead and Hadley Leithead, along with a kill from Mehling, pulled Southeast up, 9-3, in the second set. Hartman blocked an attempt by Gordon-Rushville to score and Southeast doubled its opponent in scoring, 12-6.

A kill by Hadley Leithead and a block from Mehling expanded Southeast’s lead, 21-13. Llewellyn aced a serve for game point, 25-13.
