Lady Lancers pick up first win

TORRINGTON – The Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers went 2-2 in their home gym at the WyoBraska Tournament over the weekend, recording their first two wins of the 2017 season.

EWC 3, Garden City 2

The Lady Lancers started the weekend hot, winning their first two sets over Garden City Community College, 25-18 and 25-19. The visitors rallied to win the next two sets, 25-23 and 25-21 to force a winner-takes-all fifth set. EWC managed to return to their winning ways, posting a score of 15-12.

Three Lady Lancers combined for 31 kills in the win with Precious leading the way (11) and Lissette Lefforge and Dawson Sharman each adding 10. Lefforge led the way in blocks, with two, while Williams and Shaniah Freeseman each had one. In the back line, Williams was second on the team in digs, with 11, only behind Helena Khouri’s 21.

Khouri had a solid game at the service line, matching Kylee Tresch for the team lead in aces, with two apiece. Tresch also contributed in assists, edging out Alex Simmerman (20) for the team-lead, with 25.

Western Wyoming 3, EWC 1

In the second game Friday, EWC lost the first set, 25-21, before snagging a win in the second in extra points, 26-24. The Lady Mustangs took control to win the next two sets (25-18, 25-20) to pick up the match win.

Sharman, Williams and Lefforge again led the way in kills, but Sharman led the way this time with 12, followed by Williams (10) and Lefforge (nine). Sharman also added two aces to her stat line.

Khouri continued her solid weekend defensively, recording 22 digs, followed by Jaysie Thomas, who had 10, and Sharman who kicked in eight. Simmerman and Tresch switched placed on the leaderboard in assists, with Simmerman accounting for 23 and Tresch chipping in 17.

Northwest 3, EWC 1

To open Saturday’s action, Northwest picked up two close set wins over the Lady Lancers, 25-23 and 25-20. In the third set, EWC picked up a 25-20 win, before losing the fourth set and match, 25-16.

On top of being the two assist leaders who combined for 31 assists, Tresch and Simmerman both had two aces in the loss. Lefforge topped the list in kills, with 11, while Freeseman added eight of her own. At the net, Lefforge and Kodi Edwards each accounted for two blocks, with another coming from Paige Williams.

EWC 3, Central Wyoming 0

In its final game of the tournament, EWC made quick work of CWC, snagging the win in three sets. The Lady Lancers won the first (25-16) and third (25-19) sets by several points. In the second set, EWC was put to the test, but still came up with the two-point win, 25-23.

In the shortest game of the weekend, Williams (eight) and Lefforge (seven) still tallied up the kills, while they both also had a block. To close out the weekend, Khouri again led EWC in digs, with 19. Williams added 10 digs of her own. Tresch paced the team in assists, with 15, while Simmerman added 11.

The Lady Lancers returned to their home floor Tuesday against Western Nebraska Community College after press time. Their next action comes on the road when they play Casper College at 7 p.m. Friday and Sheridan College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
