Celebrating the Spirit with music

TORRINGTON – On Sunday, January 21, Kevin and Heidi Cheng appeared at Torrington’s Berean Church to share their love of music and the Lord with the community.

Kevin Cheng, originally from Taiwan, came to the United States to continue his music training in Central City, Nebraska. While enrolled in the bible college he was attending, Cheng learned about the Lord and how to hunt from a local farmer.

“He would take me hunting and tell me about the Lord and being saved,” Cheng said “I had never heard of being saved or about the Lord and I wanted to learn more.”

Cheng’s first date with his wife, Heidi, whose family helped to field dress deer in the area, happened by pure coincidence, although their paths had crossed in the past. On his way back to the school after a day of hunting with no luck he struck a deer while driving. He took the deer directly to Heidi’s house where she welcomed him in and together, they went to work field dressing the animal. Eventually they married, creating room for the joke

“I got him for a fairly good deal,” she quipped “Just a ‘buck’. “

They spend time traveling to churches spreading the word of the gospel through their musical talents. Cheng plays the piano and Heidi plays the violin. At the Berean church on Sunday, they played some recognizable tunes including hymns, country genres, and Irish jigs. The congregation seemed know a great deal of the music played without being told the song beforehand.

“I’m not even going to tell you the name, let’s see if you can figure it out,” Heidi teased.

The Chengs are extraordinarily gifted. They played beautifully. Creating smooth segues in their performance from one song to the next, filling the church with energy and reverence depending on the tune.

The couple have partnered with the Frontier School of the Bible teaching group and private lessons, Kearney, Nebraska, where they live. They have a YouTube channel and a Facebook page, both can be found at Kevin and Heidi Cheng.
