THS wrestlers pack a punch at Lander

Posted

LANDER – The Torrington High School boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams competed against 3A rivals from across the state at the annual Lander Valley High School Invitational on January 19-20.

The tournament provided an opportunity for Torrington athletes to gain experience grappling with rivals they will likely see in the postseason.

The Lady Blazer girls’ team, fielding only two athletes at Lander, placed 19th out of 27 teams with 14 points. The Blazer boys secured 19th place as well in a field of 26 teams. The boys posted 41.5 team points.

“Lander was a tough tournament with a lot of good teams,” head coach Cody Grant said. “All the wrestlers that competed gained some good experience and learned where they are at in this point of the season. We had some good individual performances placing in their individual brackets and some coming up just short.”

In the girls’ tournament, freshman Iree Hershey placed fifth in the 140-pound weight bracket after pinning Green River’s Adia Price 37 seconds into the fifth-place match.

At 155 pounds, sophomore Aubree Fahrmeyer came in sixth place after fighting her way through the consolation rounds.

Junior Barrett Eichenberger snagged fifth place in the boys’ 132-pound bracket. Eichenberger battled his way back through the consolation rounds, picking up four wins, including two pins and a technical fall. Eichenberger defeated Lander’s Landon Jones by an 8-7 decision in the fifth-place match.
