Praises be to God

We just “went through” our first major winter calving storm as retired ranchers. Loved all the comments about us not having to care or worry anymore! I kind of chuckled as folks mentioned this, or posted them on social media! It is true that the work of getting ready and trying to figure things out was “0”on the work and worry meter. However, the concern and care for the well-being of our neighbors and friends and their livestock was absolutely off the charts.

As this storm started showing up in the weather reports, we knew things were going to be “interesting.’ As always the track of the storm makes a huge difference. Our care meter started on the upswing as we know and understand the planning involved in getting your livestock gathered and in position for the best outcome. Because of our retirement, Greg was able to be an extra set of hands to those needing a little help.

I think it is the same for any situation that you have ever been in. Once that situation is over, you are very aware when you learn of others going through the same thing. I went through slow, long deaths with both of my parents. When I hear of someone going through the same thing, I am hyper aware of what they might need or possibly how I can help.  Unless you have walked in their shoes, you are often unaware of just what might be needed!  For any of us that have had kids, and we see a momma with her hands full, we remember, and know. The heart of a retired farmer will sure start speeding up when a hail storm is predicted that has the potential to wipe a whole years full of work out in minutes. Maybe he can’t physically do anything, but he will do the best thing, pray!  Just because we are done with a phase, a life adventure, or a career, just means we have more empathy for those who are going through the same thing!

So what do we do with the knowledge we have gained? Use it! Each situation is unique and each need is different, just as we are. Pray for great wisdom in how we can help and not hinder! Do something with the caring spirit that God has placed in your heart.

I Corinthians I:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
