Local student awarded American Legion Auxiliary scholarship

LAGRANGE – The American Legion Auxiliary recently awarded Tylar Stoddard of Platte River School the Spirit of Youth Scholarship. Stoddard will receive $1,000 toward tuition at Black Hill State University next fall. 

Students from throughout the Northwestern Division submitted entries for the scholarship, and criteria included a letter of recommendation, community service performed, high academic scores and a written essay. Additionally, Stoddard volunteers in the community as a member of the John A. McGill American Legion Auxiliary Unit 70 in LaGrange.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #70 congratulates Tylar Stoddard on her achievement. Cheryl Grandstaff of the local Auxiliary said, “Tylar shows deep respect for Veterans by engaging them in conversation and learning about their experiences and advice. Her respect and encouragement for Veterans demonstrates dynamic leadership. Tylar displays high morals and honest character in every endeavor.  She oozes with personality and enthusiasm.”

The American Legion Auxiliary, founded in 1919, is a community of volunteers serving veterans, military, and their families. ALA members assist veterans in hospitals, advocate for veteran issues, support therapeutic creative arts festivals, distribute poppies for remembrance, and much more. In addition to serving the military community, the American Legion Auxiliary hosts ALA Girls Nation and the ALA Girls State programs that teach future leaders about government and civic responsibility.
