TORRINGTON – Local restaurant Deacon’s will be hosting a visit from America’s Best Restaurants (ABR) in mid-August 2024. 

America’s Best Restaurants, a national media and marketing company focusing on bringing attention to local, independently-owned restaurants, will bring its ABR Roadshow to the restaurant on August 15th. Popular dishes will be highlighted, along with an extensive on-camera interview with owner Karlee Jones about the restaurant’s special place in the community. The episode will be aired extensively on social media channels at a later date.

Jones began work as a server at Deacon’s at age seventeen, and took over as owner at the beginning of 2020. When Covid shut the restaurant down a few months later, she found herself desperate for money because she had spent her savings remodeling the kitchen.
“I was like ‘well, what the hell am I supposed to do?’” Jones recalls. “My mother-in-law looks at me and she goes, well, you could sell cookies. And that’s what I did. I made 3400 cookies in four days. I went to Torrington. I said, I’ve got dollar cookies. This is what they’re for. We need to reopen. And I raised double what we needed.” 

Jones paid the bills and got a food truck and reopened.

“That was a crazy first year,” she says. 

The farmhouse-diner-style eatery with a fireplace and cute decor offers a menu of sandwiches, salads and wraps, burgers, entrees and steaks. They serve breakfast until 11 am and also offer a wide array of beverages, including coffee drinks, Italian sodas, and flavored teas and lemonade.
Jones has tried to keep Deacon’s on the same path the original owners began, and adds that the love she has for her customers is what makes her restaurant so special to her.

“The customer relationships I’ve built with each one of my regulars have become family. It was more than just learning their name and knowing their order by heart, it was becoming family,” Jones told the Torrington Telegram right after opening. “Deacon’s has my heart; my customers are family and this place is home.”

America’s Best Restaurants will be filming on location on Thursday August 15th from 9 am to noon MST. The press is invited to attend. The restaurant’s finished episode premiere date will be announced on their Facebook page and will be featured on America’s Best Restaurants’ website.
