Torrington girls fall in OT

TORRINGTON – The Torrington Lady Trailblazers were tied heading into overtime before giving up two goals in the first extra time period to fall to Douglas at home on Thursday, 2-0.
Both teams had their chances during regulation, but neither the Lady Blazers nor Lady Bearcats were able to capitalize with a goal.
“Douglas pretty much only attacked on a quick counter, which is what they did in Douglas as well, so we pretty much knew what to expect out of them,” coach Travis Rapp said. “I thought our defenders did a pretty good job of slowing that counter and sending the ball back forward to our midfielders.”
As neither team was able to score, the game went into extra time at a 0-0 tie.

“Douglas looked really tired, so we wanted to push the ball forward with more pace in our own counter attack,” Rapp said. “The girls were pumped and ready to win a game.”
The Lady Bearcats came out ready to play in the first extra time period, scoring a goal in the first minute to go up 1-0. The Douglas goal had Torrington reeling and the Lady Blazers conceded another goal in the third minute. Despite switching to a more offensive scheme after giving up two goals, Torrington was unable to find the back of the net, falling 2-0.
The loss drops Torrington to 1-11 on the season. They have a week between games to try and get their roster in order for a final push during the regular season.
“We haven’t had our entire planned starting lineup for a single game this season,” Rapp said. “We’ve started three goalies and played four. Hopefully the eight days without a game will allow us to get healthy before this final stretch of the season.”
The Lady Blazers return to the pitch against Buffalo on Saturday, with the varsity game slated for 12 p.m. In an earlier contest, Buffalo bested Torrington 5-0, while the Lady Blazers were missing several starters.
“Buffalo has a good team. They’ve been racked all season,” Rapp said. “I know everyone looks at the lack of goals, and you obviously have to score to win, but if our defense doesn’t stay marked the entire game, our offense doesn’t have much of a chance to score. If our midfield doesn’t get back defensively and our forwards don’t check back to the ball, you can’t possess well, and you can’t score goals.”
