THS tracksters excel at Wiseman Invite

Posted

TORRINGTON – Torrington High School tracksters posted strong performances and new PRs, while bagging hardware at the 2024 Wiseman Invite the team hosted on May 3.

Torrington and its opponents also braved deteriorating weather conditions on Friday. What started out as a warm, sunny morning quickly transitioned into less-than-ideal conditions with a brutal, sustained wind roaring down from the north, plummeting temperatures, gray clouds and occasional rain.

The Lady Blazers secured third place as a team out of a field of 10 schools, including several large 4A squads from Cheyenne, posting 106 team points. The Blazer boys advanced to fifth place with 55 cumulative points.

Sophomore Brooklyn Asmus left the competition in the dust in both the girls’ 100- and 200-meters. Asmus opened the afternoon with a victory in the 100-meters, clocking in at 12.03 seconds. The Lady Blazer crossed the finish line 0.16 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Wheatland’s Desirae Iacovetto.

Asmus captured gold in the 200-meters, timing in at 24.72 seconds and winning by a considerable 0.60-second margin.

Junior Jaycee Hurley bagged gold in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.65 seconds. Hurley beat the second-place finisher, Rachel Hedum of Cheyenne South, by nearly two seconds.

Two Lady Blazers relay teams garnered gold at the meet. The 1600-meter sprint medley relay team consisting of sophomores Natalie Hawes, Trishell Pontarolo and Natalie Long and senior Alyssa Wondercheck won with a state-prequalifying time of 4 minutes, 31.99 seconds. The team pulled ahead of Laramie by 0.56 seconds.

Hawes, Hurley, Wondercheck and Asmus captured gold in the girls’ 4x100-meter relay, crossing the finish line 2.75 seconds ahead of Laramie to post a time of 50.52 seconds.

“It’s always great to host the Wiseman Invite,” coach Russell Stienmetz said. “We had great participation from our athletes and excellent competition in both boys’ and girls’ track and field events. It was also great to get the entire meet in considering the weather.”

Next up for Torrington is the 3A East Regional Track Meet in Wheatland on May 10-11.

“We had lots of athletes prequalify for state, which gives us options and flexibility going into the postseason,” Stienmetz said. “We will be able to move athletes around in relays and hope for the best in terms of team points.”

Clocking the 100-meter hurdles in at 16.75 seconds, Hawes clinched second place in the event.

Freshman Kadence Schamel scooped up fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles, timing in at 17.49 seconds, and went on to place sixth in the 300-hurdles at 55.91 seconds.
