TORRINGTON – Sarah Bersang racked up 37 points as the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers cruised to a 78-60 win over Laramie County Community College at home Tuesday.
The Lady Lancers got off to a good start with a 15-10 lead after the end of the first quarter. By halftime, EWC was up 41-29. The Lady Lancers continued to add to their lead, up 62-47 at the end of the third quarter and they never looked back.
“The first half we struggled a little bit with foul issues, so there really wasn’t a flow,” coach Tom Anderson said. “In the second half we were able to play defense without fouling and grow our lead.”
Bersang’s 37 points was 23 points more than any other girl that took the floor on Tuesday. She shot 12-of-21 from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. She added 10 points from the free-throw line, knocking down 10-of-12. On top of solid scoring, Bersang added two rebounds, three assists and four steals.
“I didn’t realize she had that many points until I looked at the stats,” Anderson said. “She did a good job of seeing what the defense gave her and taking advantage of it.”

Carna Prokic was the only other Lady Lancer in double-figures, with 14 points. She had a team-high six rebounds, four on offense. Prokic led EWC in assists and steals, with six in each category.
“I thought Carna Prokic had a nice night for us with some steals and a number of assists,” Anderson said. “She really made some things happen.”
Katrina Terrell, with eight points, Emily Evans, with six, and Sophie Claycomb, with six, rounded out the top scorers for the Lady Lancers. The three combined for six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The Lady Lancers were hot from behind the arc on Tuesday. Their 50-percent shooting from three-point land was highlighted by a 62.5 percent shooting percentage from deep in the second half. Five different players for EWC knocked down three-pointers on the night. LCCC mustered to shoot 20 percent from behind the arc.
“It was just dictated by the defense they played,” Anderson said of the hot shooting from deep. “We have girls who can shoot, we just need to be consistent.”
EWC shot 46.6 percent from the field against the Golden Eagles, just a tick above LCCC’s 45.2 percent.
The Lady Lancers were outrebounded on the night, 32-30, but outperformed the Golden Eagles in assists and steals. EWC had 18 assists and 16 steals to LCCC’s 10 assists and 10 steals. EWC also forced 22 turnovers, while relinquishing the ball just 13 times.
EWC now sits at 15-10 this season with an 8-5 record in the conference. The Lady Lancers only have five games remaining in the regular season.
They will play back-to-back home games this weekend, as they host North Platte Community College Friday at 5:30 p.m. and McCook Community College Saturday at 2 p.m.
“It’s crunch time,” Anderson said. “We are playing some teams in the same situation as we are. A win for them helps them in seeding like it would help us.”
