TORRINGTON – In a short, uneventful meeting Tuesday evening, Sept. 19, the Torrington City Council approved platting changes and bills covering Sept.6-19. Additionally, Mayor Mike Varney read correspondence from the Wyoming Elks Association thanking the City for the welcome the organization received during its summer convention; a reminder of the Community Hospital 40th Anniversary Re-dedication Sept. 28, and a reminder of the Rotary Alzheimer’s Gathering educational fund-raiser Sept. 21 at the Lincoln Complex.
He also presented City Clerk/Treasurer Lynnette Strecker with a plaque from the Association of Public Treasurers of the United States and Canada in recognition of her service to the community. Strecker has been with the City of Torrington 15 years.
“It was another short evening,” Varney said after the meeting that began at 7 p.m. and concluded shortly after 8 p.m.
“When you don’t have money to deal with, there isn’t much action,” he said. “You just take care of what is at hand, and go home.”
During the session, acting as the Board of Adjustment, the council approved a petition to adjust the city’s zoning map. Dennis Estes, the city’s building official, said the un-zoned property is located at 1942 E. P St. The council unanimously approved the proposed Zone District R-2A, a single-family condominium townhouse dwelling district, which covers 2.6 acres near the top of the hill, south of East 20th Ave. The ordinance will be acted on at the next council meeting, Oct. 10.
A request from WWC Engineering, on behalf of David Ernst, requested the vacation and re-plat of the Ernst Subdivision, involving property at 537 East 17th Ave. The intent is to create larger lots, with improved accessibility. Currently, main access to city utilities is by an alley. The land adjoins the northwest corner of the U.S. Hwy. 85 bypass, and includes four lots. The request was approved by the council.
A variance request by Thomas Allan was also approved. The property affected adjoins the alley behind 2426 East B St. The owner requested the change in order to improve access to a proposed covered carport. Accessory buildings are now limited to 1,124 square feet. The variance would allow for an additional 700 square feet. Estes said required notification letters would be sent to neighbors within 150 feet of the change.
In other action, the council approved awarding a bid to J-Built Homes, Inc., for street improvements on East 24th Avenue. The total project bid of $36,788.40, includes pavement repairs and installation of ADA access curbs.
Bills covering transactions of Sept. 6-19, in the amount of $639,359.79, were also approved.
In final action for the evening, the council went into executive session, with no action taken.
