Painting party produces funds, colors, and fun

TORRINGTON – In a creative fundraising effort, the Torrington High School Speech and Debate Team joined forces with the THS Art Department to host two Painting Parties last week. More than 50 people, both adults and sponsored students, participated in the paint-your-own-canvas opportunity at the THS commons.
THS art teacher and local artist, Steve Law used his expertise to guide the budding artists in mixing colors and utilizing basic brush stroke techniques on the way to painting a colorful acrylic tree on a canvas. While participants created their unique trees and enjoyed light snacks, Law painted his own canvas and took time to give individual instruction and encouragement. At the end of the evening, participants left with a beautiful and colorful painting of their own.
All proceeds from the event helped in fundraising for the THS Speech and Debate Team’s National Tournament trip to Birmingham, Ala. Sophomore Hope Wolfe qualified for the National Tournament with her powerful Program Oral Interpretation piece highlighting the horror of school shootings.
Law donated several pieces of his own art to support the cause and further fundraising efforts. At the Painting Party, participants had an opportunity to win a hand-thrown ceramic bowl and two sugar bowls in a raffle. Law also donated five large ceramic bowls. Until Friday, June 2, the public has an opportunity to bid on one of Law’s unique and handcrafted ceramic bowls at a silent auction at Platte Valley Community Bank.
