Outdoor session for City Council

TORRINGTON – A plan that would allow Torrington Police Officers to keep their patrol cars at their homes was approved during the regular city council meeting Tuesday.

Torrington Police Chief Timothy Hurd said the proposal would increase both speed and efficiency of officers’ responses to emergencies in the community. Hurd also said the plan would not exceed current departmental budget caps while providing 11 cars for the project. Officers would be responsible for the cars they’re assigned.

“One of the major things when I come to a city as wonderful as Torrington and realize that there are some things that could be changed,” Hurd said. “One of the things is to analyze and restructure an agency to save the tax payers money, as well as to improve services and response times.”

The Torrington City Council held it’s bi-monthly meeting in Jirdon Park on Tuesday in conjunction with the annual Neighborhood Night Out event.

The event provided food from the city and the Elks Club, with Pinnacle Bank providing the barbecue and cooks for the hamburgers and hot dogs. Waggin’ Tails staff and critters were also on hand, looking for families to adopt animals who needed a home and provided ice cream. The city had free swimming a bounce house and volleyball, with a movie in the park showing of The Gentle Giant.

The Goshen County Sheriff brought their narcotics dog, showing how the dog finds drugs in the county.
