Robbery Staged at Lingle Merchandise Store

The general merchandise store of Byrd and Clover at Lingle was broken into Tuesday night and a shot gun Savage high power rifle, some cheese and crackers and several packages of cigarettes taken.

At what time the robbery was committed is unknown and up until Thursday morning no trace of the thieves had been found, it being unknown whether it was by local residents or parties from out of town.

South Side Land Owners Fight For Lower Taxes

A number of farmers who comprise the land owners under the south side canal met Wednesday afternoon in body with the county commissioners asking for lower taxes. They presented their case fully stating that they and those whom they represent felt that a more equitable assessment of the property under the reclamation service should be made and that the standing assessment should be reconsidered.

Abundant Supply of Bananas Here For Ailing Child

Little two-year-old Jimmy Mahoney, ill with celias, a rare disease that demands a diet almost solely of bananas, is being virtually snowed under with the tropical fruit this week.

He requires about 10 bananas a day. As he becomes a little older and the child ailment beings to leave him he will require less of them.

Due to a press association news dispatch being sent out of Scottsbluff last Saturday giving the erroneous impression that bananas are impossible to get in Torrington, people in Cheyenne and Denver have been sending them here. The report was very unfair to Torrington merchants, who have limited supplies of bananas and are glad to take care of any emergency case.

Torrington wins from Lusk and Huntley teams

Coach Archie Coon’s hard-battling Torrington Trailblazer basketball athletes won both of their games played during the past week. Last Friday night on the local high school floor, Torrington took the measure of Lusk by 53 to 26. Don Spence was high point man with 16 points.

Tuesday evening Torrington journeyed over to Huntly where they faced considerable opposition. The two teams battled on a par for most of the game, but Torrington emerged in the win column by a score of 33 to 23.

Dr. Simmons Named District Superintendent; Board Elects Officers, Draws for Terms

Dr. Hugh Simmons previous District No. 3 superintendent for the last year, was elected for Goshen County Unified School District No. 1 Superintendent in an executive session at the first public meeting of the new board Monday evening in the Torrington Junior High All-Purpose room.

“As we look into the future, there are unknowns,” he said in accepting the position. “But one thing we have in mind is the boys and girls and we will work for them. We will work on problems that will benefit them all.

Fear…. Dictating proposals?

Citing economic development of Goshen County and the future of livestock operations and farming as a major concern, the Cattlemen’s Committee met to discuss the proposed Land Use Plan Tuesday afternoon.

Wayne Korell led the discussion and reminded feedlot owners that young farmers coming into an ag-related business will be discouraged by all the regulations this proposed plan would place on them.

“I know a young man that bough a small cattle feeding operation in hopes of expanding,” Korell said. “All these regulations will make it impossible for him to expand and keep the property profitable. We will see less of the next generation go into farming and feeding.”

Drug bust nets arrest

Citizens’ complaints initiated a two-month investigation that resulted in a drug arrest in Torrington on Sunday.

Timothy Lea Stevens, 34, was arrested after officers from the South East Enforcement Team, Torrington Police Department and Goshen County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at his residence on East C Street.

Approximately 44 grams of cocaine, crack cocaine paraphernalia, weighing scales, drug packaging materials, syringes and nine firearms were sized.
