Living stones

Posted

Recently my Quiet Time reading took me to Psalm 62, and I “stumbled” upon Psalm 62 and was once again interested in verses 5 and 6, “My soul, wait in silence for God only, for my hope is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, I shall not be shaken.” And then I read in Isaiah 26;4, “Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord, we have an everlasting Rock.”

God has been showing me many verses about being my Rock and my stronghold, and each time I read the word rock I stop and see how He is using it this time. A couple of days later I was studying in 1Peter 2 and verses 5 and 6 really got my attention, “You also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God, through Jesus Christ. For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold I lay in Zion a Choice Stone, A Precious Corner Stone, and He who believes in Him shall not be disappointed.” I know that Jesus Christ is the Corner Stone, but what and who are the living stones it talks about? I’ve read that many times and never stopped to think what a living stone would be and “how” a stone could be alive.

As I pondered that verse, I began to realize what it means for me and a ladies’ church group that I am in. With Christ as the Corner Stone, we are to be living stones to be building upon the house of God. We need to be solid in our faith, exhibiting the fruits of the Spirit in our lives, being a safe haven for others, and welcoming sinners in to hear the Word of the Lord and find comfort in learning of Jesus. We need to be a light to others, bringing His light into the darkness, and Rock solid in our faith. We are to be a stronghold for others to come in and be loved and encouraged.

As I continued to ponder the hardness of the rock, and how it could be living, I thought of the geodes that I have collected over the years. They are solid on the outside and just look like an ordinary rock but cracked open they reveal beautiful crystal formations on the inside. It reminded me that we need to be rock solid in our faith but loving and welcoming on the inside as Jesus trusts us with His people that need help. In us they need to find a safe haven, a refuge from the worldly problems they face. And as a group of men or women, as living stones joined together, we can be a mighty stronghold with Jesus as our Corner Stone, a safe place for others to come and hear about Jesus Christ and His love for them.

You wouldn’t think of building a house with” living stones”, but that is exactly what God’s house is built of, with Jesus Christ as the Corner Stone; a mighty fortress, fully alive, with a beautiful spirit within of God’s people praising Him and lifting voices in song to sing of how wonderful He is.

Ephesians 2:19-22 “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, being built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together is growing into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.”
