Election season

Posted

Election season has been and remains upon us in Goshen County, and the U.S. abroad. With election season comes a great deal of challenges. The candidates want your votes, the voters want answers, and nobody seems to know how to go about it anymore without being disrespectful.

What’s happened to us? Why are we so quick to be angry and outraged? Let’s change that.

We all know there are issues with our government, but it’s us, the people, the citizens who are responsible for making the changes necessary to correct these issues. We, as a people, need to take these challenges head-on. We need to work with our representatives and guide them in making the right decision to reflect the will of the people. We can’t expect anything to change when we sit and grumble about it, but don’t take action.

Call your representatives, email them, stop by their offices, whatever it takes; make your voice heard. Without asking questions or informing your representatives of what’s important to you, they won’t know. We post our elected officials’ information on the bottom of our opinion page in each week’s paper, so you can go directly to the source. We do our best to keep this information up to date for our readers. If you see something incorrect, please let us know.

Another great way to address concerns is to write letters to the editor about your thoughts and concerns.

Our goal at the newspaper is to deliver the news to the people; tell the people what is going on, but that leaves out the perspectives of the citizens at-large at times. While we try to cover the whole of what is going on, we need the citizens to keep us moving forward and finding adequate solutions to the issues our communities face.

Send me an email at ldailey@torringtontelegram.com, write me a letter and send it to the Torrington Telegram, 2025 Main St., Torrington, WY 82240, give me a call at 307-532-2184 or stop in. I am always happy to take time to visit, whether it be social matters or business matters.

By working together, we can accomplish a great deal, but it takes everyone.

For this coming election, research, ask questions and get to know your candidates. Goshen County needs representatives that embody Goshen County values and principals. If you’re just putting a check mark next to a name because you’ve “heard the name,” you’re doing yourself and the community a disservice. Know who you’re putting into office.

This is one of the biggest points I want to get across: if you feel your representatives aren’t representing you, the community or the people of Goshen County, talk to them. That doesn’t mean you accost them with fists held in the air. Approach them as you would your neighbor and talk to them like they are your neighbor. Show respect.

We all live together and work together, so there is no sense in being disrespectful. It’s okay to disagree. It’s okay to have different opinions. It’s all in how you approach the matter.

This election season, I hope we can all stand with integrity. I hope we can elect the best people to represent us at all levels of the government. In order for us to do this, we have to talk to those people running and let them know what we expect, while still showing dignity and respect.

Most of our issues in our community, state, nation and abroad would cease if we would simply talk to one another and treat one another with dignity and respect.
