HAMPTON, Va. – Dwight Albert Rief, 79, passed away Saturday October 21st from a brief yet devastating battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) at the James River Convalescent Center in Newport News, Va. 

Dwight was born and grew up in Madison, Neb.  He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Europe.  He spent the better part of the 70s and 80s in Torrington and has lived in Hampton since 1988.  Dwight’s contagious smile, outstanding sense of humor and quick wit will be greatly missed. 

Dwight is survived by his wife Sharon; sons, Ricky Rief of Omaha, Neb., and Gerald Rief of Cheyenne;  daughters, Debra Rief and Ashley Rief of Virginia, Atonia Tafoya of Littleton, Colo.; step-daughter Sheri Patton of Virginia; 15 grandkids;  five great-grandkids; and his sister Audrey Sullivan of Boulder, Colo. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rusty(Floyd) and Mae Rief; his sister Shirley Rief Bryson and his second wife Norma Rief. 

Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Smith Brothers Funeral Home of Hampton.
