Doug Chamberlain of LaGrange casts Wyoming electoral college vote

CHEYENNE – The electoral college made up of 538 electors had one of Goshen County’s own this year: Doug Chamberlain of LaGrange.

A Vietnam veteran, former Wyoming House Speaker and longtime representative, Chamberlain cast one of Wyoming’s three electoral votes for President Donald Trump at the state capitol at noon on Dec. 14 alongside fellow electors, Karl Allred and Marti Halverson. Trump received more than 70% of the vote in Wyoming.

This year is Chamberlain’s first as an elector after being nominated at the Wyoming Republican Party convention.

“It really is an honor,” Chamberlain said.

Wyoming is granted three electors based on the number of senators and representatives allotted to the state – one representative and two senators – according to the Secretary of State’s website.

Because Trump, a Republican, received the majority of votes in Wyoming three Republican electors convened at the capitol for proceedings led by Governor Mark Gordon and Secretary of State Ed Buchanan, another Goshen County resident.

Per state statute, electors receive $50 compensation and mileage at the present rate for state employees. Chamberlain said he has yet to receive a check, so he expects to have it mailed to him.

Though Chamberlain enjoyed casting his vote this year, he said he won’t do it again in 2024.

“I’ve been around a long time, been involved in the political world and public service for over 40 years,” he said. “It’s time to move it to the younger generation.”

The United States Congress will convene on Jan. 6 to count the votes and certify the next president and vice president of the United States.
