GOSHEN COUNTY – The rest area between Lingle and Torrington no longer has bathrooms, a water fountain, or any sort of structure, but that didn’t stop dozens of visitors from parking there Monday morning for the total solar eclipse.
Amongst the crowd of day-trippers were at least two individuals who were several thousand miles from home – hailing from the island town of Stenløse, Denmark, just outside of Copenhagen.
Per and Elisabeth don’t consider themselves eclipse chasers, however they did witness the total solar eclipse in Salzburg, Austria in 1999.
The pair began their three-week trip to the U.S. in Denver, Colo. They visited Pike’s Peak before heading north to Goshen County to witness their second total solar eclipse. From here, they planned to visit Rapid City, S.D., Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Glacier National Park in Montana, Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, Monument Valley and more.
“We’ve been planning this trip for about a year-and-a-half,” Per said. “But we couldn’t book hotels more than a year in advance.”
Although many hotels were sold out, the couple found a room in Cheyenne.
“It’s very nice,” Per said, adding he found Wyoming to be “wonderful.”
“We prefer the unpopulated areas to the city,” he said.
Per and Elisabeth have been married 29 years.
